Hi, all! This isn’t for a real baby, I just like to collect names for stories. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this name? I’ve had a crush on it lately, and I just wanted to hear opinions on it. Thanks for bearing with my millions of posts!!
Seems a little too old fashioned for my personal taste, but I would love to see it in a story! [name_f]My[/name_f] only association is the maple syrup brand.
I love it! Especially with the nickname [name_u]Jem[/name_u].
It’s a very beautiful and lyrical name!
I love [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]! Sweet, warm and cosy feeling but that strong i sound is also brilliant.
I prefer [name_f]Jemma[/name_f]/Gemma instead. Not a big fan of [name_f]Jemima[/name_f].
I have Jemimas in my family tree, so for me it isn’t an unknown name or specifically tied to recent events here in the US. That said, I love the name and would love to see it used.
I really, really love it
It’s relatively well-used here in the UK, without ever being too popular, and has a sophisticated yet sweet and down-to-earth vibe.
I don’t know where you’re based, but you should be aware (if you’re not already) there is a lot of controversy around this name in the US, due to its association with a brand of syrup with what can only be described as a racist stereotype as its mascot, logo and brand name.
In the light of the BLM protests, the company has actually recently announced a total rebrand, but I think the association will remain for a long while yet.
@katinka I’m in the US, and I have to agree.
It would be a tricky character name to pull off, but it would depend upon how the character is developed as well.
Unfortunately, I always associate [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] with the racist history and undertones.
I prefer [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] because of it, and the nn [name_u]Jem[/name_u] is so cool!
My SIL is [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] so that’s what I associate with it, and also the doll from Play School (Australian TV show for children). It’s such a sweet, fun name. It makes me sad that it has such a negative connotation in other countries, because it’s lovely.
Thanks for the heads up. I do live in the US, so unfortunately I think it might be too controversial right now. I didn’t realize this was going on, so, I think I’ll let it rest for a few years. Thanks for your time!!
I wouldn’t rule out [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] just because of the current controversy going on in the US. I think I find it a more interesting name then [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] etc. As we see often on Nameberry names can easily develop personal negative associations. While “controversial” / eyebrow raising at this current specific day… will it be like that a week from now? A year from now? I wouldn’t say so… this isn’t like the name adolf hitler.
There is this article also from The Jemimas family saddened by the negative association brought to the name so based off of it I’d hate to see it being thrown to the wayside just based on today’s current news headlines
@Alix2016 Thank you for posting this article. I agree with the family; we unfortunately get so tunnel-visioned (in any of the major causes in recent years) to the point that history is erased, and therefore we have nothing to learn from in the future.
