How do we feel about this name? I love the witchy / dark and mysterious feel, which for me elevates it from its very pedestrian and unremarkable similarity to [name_f]Janet[/name_f]. Yes I’m taking my associations directly from the woman in black and [name_f]Jennet[/name_f] Device of the Pendle witch trials, not the best namesakes tbh… but I like the feel those associations give me, second hand. Thoughts?
As an aside, what would you name Jennet’s sister? [name_f]Jennet[/name_f] Device’s sister was Alizon - weird how so many historic forms / spellings of names can now seem modern compared to the current day established forms. I’m thinking [name_f]Sylva[/name_f].
Is it like the animal genet (JEN-it) or the name [name_f]Jenette[/name_f] (jeh-NET)?
I’d say jeh-net.
[name_f]Jenette[/name_f] appeals to me as an alternative to [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f], another name I have loved for a long time.
[name_f]Jennet[/name_f] does have a slight mysterious feel - maybe because it reminds me of leverett, linnet or fennel - while also feeling slightly dated (Janet/Jeanette) but also slightly edgy (like [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_u]Barrett[/name_u], Wrenna).
[name_f]Sylva[/name_f] would make a great sister. I’d consider Tanzy/Tansy, [name_f]Elswyth[/name_f], [name_f]Cozette[/name_f], [name_f]Lizbeth[/name_f], [name_f]Petra[/name_f]
Oo I never hear this name! [name_f]My[/name_f] association is with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Yates’ YA novel The Journeyman and its sequel, where she used it for a character. [name_f]Jennet[/name_f] herself is the sweet country girl type, but interestingly it’s still associated with witch trials, as the novels are set (I think) shortly after Colonial times, and Jennet’s love interest, [name_m]Jared[/name_m], comes close to being condemned as a witch for his abilities (which are portrayed as being actually un-supernatural in the book.)
Other character names [name_m]Yates[/name_m] used in these stories include [name_f]Nancy[/name_f], [name_f]Thankful[/name_f] (g), [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], [name_u]Delight[/name_u], [name_m]Tobit[/name_m], [name_m]Eben[/name_m], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Benoni[/name_m], [name_u]John[/name_u], [name_u]Corban[/name_u].
[name_f]Jennet[/name_f] (and jenny) is also a word for a female donkey, if you find that something to consider
Instinctively I say this Jenn-it, it feels like an honour for a [name_f]Janet[/name_f] or [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f].
And potentially feels more fresh than either of those mainly because it’s rarer.
It isn’t my favourite sounding name, and I don’t have any associations for it…even though I have seen woman in black (on stage and screen) I couldn’t have told you there was a character with this name
Oh that’s definitely something to consider! Ha. I thought it was just a [name_f]Jenny[/name_f].
Animal (this has just been pointed out to me ) - like [name_f]Janet[/name_f] with an e.
The woman in black is [name_f]Jennet[/name_f]
I assumed given the lack of characters…what I meant was even though I know the play this isn’t an association of the name for me
