I was watching a Youtube video a few months ago about a little girl named [name]Jersey[/name]. I’ve been thinking about it for a while, and it has seriously grown on me.
Living in [name]England[/name] and having visited [name]France[/name] a lot, my first thought is [name]Jersey[/name], as in the island (which is a seriously beautiful place) but I know lots of Americans will automatically think of [name]Jersey[/name] as in the state, which I’m not familiar with, but I’m guessing that it’s a not so great namesake compared to the island.
So what do you think? [name]Do[/name] you like it? And do you think it’s usable or not?
New [name]Jersey[/name] is a perfectly nice state as a whole. Certain parts of it feature a subculture that is not widely well-respected, and the landscape in certain parts is literally concrete jungle/dystopian industry gone amok (see more on that below).
As to the subculture, think [name]Jersey[/name] Shore and the movie [name]Jersey[/name] Girl, they say it all. [name]Saturday[/name] [name]Night[/name] Live also sometimes features a New [name]Jersey[/name] game show.
[name]Jersey[/name] - It’s also a term for a piece of clothing worn in sports here (like, a basketball jersey). Maybe that’s wider spread than just in the US? If so, it’s a little odd for a child.
Anyway, I agree, outside the US it should be fine, but, do keep in mind that if this person [name]EVER[/name] comes to the US, the name will get really odd reactions, at least until people know the child.
There was a news piece a few months ago on how the [name]Chanel[/name] company was planning to release a perfume called [name]Jersey[/name], after the island after all. My US facebook page literally exploded with hundreds of people sharing the link and being amused by it. Though I think it’s even funnier as a name for a perfume than a name for a person (stretches of the New [name]Jersey[/name] turnpike are major manufacturing hubs, so as you drive through parts of the state, there is a horrible industrial odor).
i think it is cute regardless of New [name]Jersey[/name] the state. Which produces a ton of fruits and vegetables every year and also has fun and notorious (?) beaches… (well I have good memories from those beaches even though the show [name]Jersey[/name] Shore makes it look like trash) ok as a name outside of the US I think it’s great…do you know how many kids are named [name]Ireland[/name] or [name]England[/name] or [name]Paris[/name]…I say go for it!
I think its beautiful but I live in [name]Canada[/name], not in the United States. I know a dog named [name]Jersey[/name], I think its a nice name. Ask people in [name]England[/name] because it has bad associations with the state. I think [name]Jersey[/name] is perfectly usable outside of the US
I’m not a huge fan, sorry. I can’t get football/basketball/hockey jerseys out of my head, or New Jersey, which is pretty much my neighbor. Its associations don’t seem particularly feminine or pretty… I always love your favorites–they have this timeless, quirky, romantic, striking feel to them all but I just can’t see Jersey fitting in with Iris, Clara, Sybella, Camilla, Jack, Alec, etc., sorry! Maybe as a GP, or a MN?
ETA: I figure I should add that I do know a little girl with the name (spelled Jerzey)… As far as I know she hasn’t gotten weird looks or judgments from her name–it’s just her name now, it doesn’t seem like a laughable matter. True, there are the associations but everyone’s looked past them. I barely know her so she hasn’t really colored my image of the name. I do know her parents, and they’re less than savory, but the little girl is just adorable. Her big sisters are Tasia (possibly short for Anastasia) and Laura–I think they got the better end of the deal, if you ask me. Sorry.
I agree with PPs that New [name]Jersey[/name] isn’t a bad place - it’s the crazy people who live there and get on TV that give it a bad name. My dad’s from the worst city in that state so trust me… I’ve seen the worst, haha. But I’ve also seen some wonderful beaches and things like that. The people I personally know from there are not at all like the obnoxious people on TV (and I’ve been to the beach where they tape [name]Jersey[/name] Shore before that started… I thought it was nice!).
Anyways, I don’t really like it. I also think of the sports jerseys and the jersey fabric. To me it’s really a word or place name, not a person’s name. Maybe as a middle name if it has meaning?
Thanks for all the great feedback. I agree that it’s probably not incredibly in-keeping with my other favourites, and I’m not likely to seriously consider using it (although I’m not expecting nor do I plan to be in the near future!) but I just love how quirky and pretty sounding it is.
I am from New [name]Jersey[/name] and have a love for the state. I also thought of the fabric and the [name]Chanel[/name] perfume. I think in [name]America[/name] it could work- just not on the [name]East[/name] Coast maybe?
