Jessica - Somewhat Classic, or Dated 1990s Name?

I’ve always had a soft spot for the name [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - although I don’t know why. I know plenty of girls who go by [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]/[name_u]Jess[/name_u]/[name_u]Jessie[/name_u], and many of them I’m indifferent towards/dislike, but I still love the name. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] since I began watching Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u], I became more drawn to the name, due to [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_m]Brown[/name_m]-[name_m]Findlay[/name_m], the actress who portrayed Lady [name_f]Sybil[/name_f].

I know for sure I want to have [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] on my list, so I’m really not fussed on the negative opinions towards it - I know that, if I’ve liked it this long without an issue, even with the negative ones that I know, that I need to stick with it. However, I’m unsure how to class it.

For me, [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] feels a bit classic, it’s got the perfect literary connections for me ([name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m], mainly), it’s well known and familiar, and fits nicely with classic choices like [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], vintage nicknames like [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f], and spunky, unpredictable choices like [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] and [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f].

Really, I’m just curious as to what ‘vibe’ (for lack of a better term) everyone gets from the name [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you feel that she’s dated, modern-classic, a bit vintage, etc?

PS: While I’m asking about [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], what are your thoughts on [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] as combinations? (I’m not a fan of [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]!)

I love [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_m]Brown[/name_m]-[name_m]Findlay[/name_m]! She’s just so beautiful. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a pretty combination too.

I know people will assume my response is purely because it is my name, but oh well. I agree with you, I see [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] among other Shakespearean classics like [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Hermia[/name_f] etc. He had a definitive style when it came to names. While I think [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]'s popularity dated it for some, I don’t feel that it’s tarnished the name at all. For some people though it is tired. One thing I will say is [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] has a different feel to me then [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]. [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is very Edwardian era to me paired with sweet middle names, whereas [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] is more… I don’t know, Elizabethan classic?

[name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is what my family calls me. Though some of the kids couldn’t say it at first so I was Sissi. [name_u]Jess[/name_u] is reserved for friends. I scarcely get called by my first name from anyone. My mother double barrels my name all the time. But I also like [name_f]Jessa[/name_f] as another option too.

Very dated to me. I feel like every second person I watch on Youtube is [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_u]Jess[/name_u] or [name_u]Jessy[/name_u], and they’re all the same age, no matter if they’re from here or somewhere else.
While it might be Shakespearean, I really don’t get that same literary classic vibe from it that I get from [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] or [name_f]Florence[/name_f] or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], I think it just has been used too much in a certain generation and then not much afterwards to feel timeless.
Not taking my own opinion about [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] into account, I think [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] has a sweet feel. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], too but here I think [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] would make a better middle name.

I don’t know how to class it to be honest. I know SO many [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]'s it’s ridiculous. Loads are my age (born early 80’s), about an equal amount born in the 90’s and now the name is starting to pop up among children my nieces age (between 5-12). I don’t know if that makes it ‘timeless’ or just unimaginative. I don’t get the ‘classic’ vibe from it, but I’m really stuck on exactly how I would class it (probably because I really don’t like the name)

Taking my own opinion of the name out of the equation, I do like the flow of [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is actually a name I quite like. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] also works well [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Edith[/name_f] suits better than [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], which although classic, has become popular as a somewhat cutsie name now and I just don’t see it sitting well next to [name_f]Jessica[/name_f].

[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] is a hard one to class. It is very eighties/nineties to me.

I prefer the sound and flow of [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] are not the best but not terrible. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] are both unexpected, I do like that.

I don’t think [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] is dated. It’s been around for so long I don’t associate it with any definite time period I guess. I like [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] the best. I’m not the biggest fan of [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] though, tbh. ~

My mum is a [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], that’s why I love that name. I think it’s a classic name, though sadly overused in the 1980s and 1990s.

I debated this over and over when naming my last daughter. We wanted to name her after my grandmother, [name_u]Jessie[/name_u], but weren’t sure if the name felt complete or not. However, I just couldn’t get over [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] feeling very tied to the 1980s, and in the end we decided to go with just [name_u]Jessie[/name_u]. I have to say, I’m quite happy with that choice now 2 years later.

I love [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]. To me it’s timeless and chic. However, I dislike the names [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] with it. I think you should use a spunkier middle name instead of a classic one.

[name_f]Jessica[/name_f]'s till top 10 in the UK at number 6. I find it a bit dated I know about eight [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]'s plus two female [name_u]Jessie[/name_u]'s all of them get called [name_u]Jess[/name_u]. It’s not a bad name though I would rather see [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] then some other 90’s names and it does have a lot of history behind it.

Like everyone else, I know about 10 [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]'s who are my age. Most of them went by [name_u]Jess[/name_u], which was weird to me because my brother is named [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] and he is also called Jes. There is a [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] at the school I work at who is 8, so it is still being used.

I think [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] is an absolutely stunning name, and I love the nicknames [name_u]Jess[/name_u] and [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] nearly as much. It’s both classic and dated, I think, because it was hugely popular at one time, but has a redeemingly rich and long history. Similar to how we’ll look at [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] in thirty years’ time, I imagine.

I think @findemaxa13 described the classic/dated issue perfectly.

I’ve taught for over 25 years and have had so many Jessicas that they have blurred together.

This doesn’t make it a bad name at all, but just…. blurry. To me, I mean.

I also know a [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] I can’t abide which doesn’t help, though when I think of [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] on Murder She Wrote I feel more positive.

To me, it feels dated. That said, I like a lot of names that are dated. Maybe just not this one so much.

I really love [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f], [name_f]Jessamyn[/name_f], and [name_f]Jessamy[/name_f] though. They feel new and fresh to me.

I get awful flash backs of crimped hair and scrunchies from the 80’s and 90’s. Its never been favorite of mine. When it first gained popularity it felt very “trendy” to me and I’ve never been able to shack that feeling. There’s nothing special about [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]. I personally don’t think It fits well with any of your name combos. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] seem life worlds about from [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] needs to stay with the Brittanys and Ashleys that is, on the decline.

I think you may have misinterpreted what I was asking - I made it clear that it was indeed staying on my list, because, personally, it doesnt feel dated to me, and I specifically said I wasn’t looking for negativity  I love the name regardless, so, unfortunately, I’m only really going to pay attention to a word or two of what you said, because it’s entirely negative. As for [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] being worlds away from [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], yes, they may be, but, as you can likely see in my signature, [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] fit my classic style, so it was an attempt to level out the 1980s/1990s feel. I completely understand that you dislike the name, but, others have stated their dislike and have still kept things positive.

Anyways, thank you everyone
