Jevgenijs

I met someone named Jevgenijs today. Does anyone know where this name comes from or how to pronounce it?

This looks like a take on [name]Eugene[/name]. Y sounds are written with Js in several languages, and u and v have history together. [name]Eugene[/name] in Russian is often transferred from the Cyrillic alphabet to the [name]Roman[/name] with [name]Yevgeny[/name]. That ij combo is classically Dutch, like [name]Rebecca[/name] Romijn [name]Stamos[/name] (who is now [name]Rebecca[/name] Romijn again). But it looks too Slavic for that. I think ij is used in some Slavic languages. Googling around, the name seems to hit some people of Latvian origin. So, I think that’s it - Latvian version of [name]Eugene[/name]/[name]Yevgeny[/name].

I’d guess the pronunciation is Yev jen ees, but I could be wrong.

I had no idea about Jevgenijs, but this makes a lot of sense! I would also say it YEV-jen-ees, too.
