Jewish naming questions?

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you know if a name can be used as a Hebrew name? I see so many names that are listed as Hebrew origin, but what makes it qualified to be an official “Hebrew Name”, that would be used for a [name_m]Bat[/name_m]/R Mitzvah or wedding?

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this thread. However, I will try an reply.

As a rule the Hebrew name should be a name that is in the Tanak (‘Old Testament’) but you can get more obscure than most people would with general names e.g. Shifrah or Yocheved for girls, Abimelech or [name_m]Mordechai[/name_m] for boys. Most names with Hebrew origins are probably fair game, there are word names used in Israeli Hebrew which would be unusual, but I don’t know if there is anything that is explicitly not allowed.

Are there names you have in mind? Sharing them might help me/others give better advice.
And as always, if in lots of doubt, ask a [name_m]Rabbi[/name_m].
