Jilly, Lily, Jillian!

Can [name]Lily[/name] be a valid nn for [name]Jillian[/name]? Our daughter’s name is [name]Jillian[/name] and we currently most often call her [name]Jillian[/name]. We’d love to have a nn for her, and while I do think [name]Jilly[/name] is cute, it really hasn’t caught on for us and we don’t use it much. I prefer [name]Lily[/name] over [name]Jilly[/name], but is it too far away from her given name to be a valid nickname?

I love this name, and I get the deductive logic, especially considering other names that have done the same- [name]Margaret[/name]->[name]Meg[/name]->[name]Peg[/name]. [name]Lily[/name] is cute, but I wonder how often she’ll have to say, “My name is [name]Jillian[/name], but you can call me [name]Lily[/name],” and have people look at her strangely and have to explain it to her. Then again, there are many people in this day and age who still have no idea that [name]Peggy[/name] is a nickname for [name]Margaret[/name]. I say if you love it and it makes sense to you, go for it. If she doesn’t like it later, she can always go by her full name.

(I do have to say, [name]Gillian[/name] is number 2 on my list for girls, with the nickname [name]Gilly[/name]. One, I just love it; two, I have an Aunt [name]Julie[/name] I think the nickname kind of honors, lol.)

[name]Alexis[/name]

We named [name]Jillian[/name] with a J after my grandma who went by [name]Janet[/name]. Her given name was [name]Genowefa[/name], and I love the G spelling of [name]Gillian[/name] too, but our last name begins and ends with a hard G, so it seemed a bit too many G’s. Thanks for your advice! We’ll probably stick with just calling her [name]Jillian[/name], but I was curious.
