My partner and I are TTC our second child. Our firstborn was unnamed for almost three weeks after his birth, and after a few months of misspellings and frustration, we amended his birth certificate to a more traditional spelling. His name is [name_m]Reuben[/name_m].
We would like to avoid a similar delay and at least some of the spelling problems with our next little one. We’ve taken a shine to the name [name_m]Joachim[/name_m]/[name_m]Joakim[/name_m], but I’m not sure if we’re asking for trouble!
We prefer the [name_m]Joakim[/name_m] spelling, both aesthetically and because the pronunciation seems more obvious. Is this version unheard of outside of northern Europe? (We’re in the U.S.) Have you ever met a [name_m]Joachim[/name_m]? [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce it, spelled this way, if reading off a roll call?
I like the [name_f]Yo[/name_f]-ah-kim pronunciation, while my partner likes [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-ah-kim/Zho-ah-kim. The upside to pronouncing the “J” as we would in English is the option for a “normal” nickname like [name_u]Jay[/name_u] or [name_u]Joey[/name_u] if the kiddo doesn’t want to use his full name. We also know a male [name_f]Kiki[/name_f] ([name_m]Keith[/name_m]) and a male [name_u]Kim[/name_u], so those options are on the table ([name_m]Reuben[/name_m] goes by [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] as often as [name_m]Ben[/name_m]/[name_m]Benny[/name_m]).
Should we stick with the traditional spelling? Does it sound like a brother to [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]? Is it too out-there? What do you think?
I would avoid giving your son [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] the nn [name_m]Benny[/name_m], because theres a huge association with teens calling each other beaners or beans or whatever and it’s all it reminds me of now, so I hate the name [name_m]Benny[/name_m]. You can do whatever you want though, of course. Maybe [name_u]Rue[/name_u] or [name_m]Ben[/name_m]?
Im not really a fan of [name_m]Joakim[/name_m], both because of how it looks and sounds. It doesn’t sound like a name and reminds me of the work joking. Or the name [name_m]Joe[/name_m] [name_u]Kim[/name_u]. I don’t know, just seems out of place. I would want to be called [name_u]Jojo[/name_u] for my entire life. Did you guys have any other suggestions? Im not trying to be rude, sorry if I sound like it.
There’s a trend of teens calling each other beans/beaners? What does it mean? I’ve never heard it before!
I really like [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]! It’s so handsome, I also love the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] on a boy and [name_m]Benny[/name_m] is so cute!
I though [name_m]Joachim[/name_m] was pronounced closer to Hwak-keem. Like [name_m]Juan[/name_m] isn’t Ju-an it’s Hwan? (I’m not doing a good job of explaining how it sounds). Though looking it up I think that’s [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m].
Honestly I just don’t love the name, unlike [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] I think it’s going to mispelled and mispronounced an awful lot. If I were to pick one way of saying it I’d go for [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-ah-kim, and I would spell it [name_m]Joachim[/name_m].
Beaner is a name that you would call a Mexican person, because they like beans. It’s more of a joke than an insult. It’s not a “trend.” [name_m]Benny[/name_m] is nowhere close to beaner. [name_m]Benny[/name_m] is a name and beaner is a made up word. They’re not even similar in sound!
I like the spelling [name_m]Joakim[/name_m], pronounced the way it looks. I’ve never seen this name or heard of it before, but I think the easier to pronounce the better.
It instantly reminds me of beaner and does sound the same but okay. I told this to the op, not you, to keep their child from getting bullied. I hate the name in general anyways, but that just makes it worse.
I prefer [name_m]Joachim[/name_m]; that’s more natural to me. At least in the Northeast US, [name_m]Joakim[/name_m] looks like a unieeq spelling or otherwise heavily ethnic. [name_m]Joachim[/name_m], on the other hand, could be from any Judeo-[name_m]Christian[/name_m] or even Islamic background, at least to my eyes.
For either spelling, I’d pronounce it jo-ah-kim on first glance, but would have no trouble remembering yo-ah-kim.
