Joel - what are your thoughts?

I’m expecting baby #1 in [name_f]May[/name_f]. My favourite boys name is [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] - however, DH isn’t convinced. He doesn’t think that [name_m]Joel[/name_m] is “firstborn son” enough, whatever that means. If baby is a boy, he will be the first great-grandson born on hubby’s side, the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son  As such hubby has ideas that the name must sound “firstborn” enough!

Made me think - what kind of boy/man do you associate with the name [name_m]Joel[/name_m]? I love it’s classic yet uncommon nature, and it’s meaning. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to see other’s thoughts (and hopefully convince DH it’s a valid choice!)

I like [name_m]Joel[/name_m]. [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] is very handsome and very nice combo.

I am not sure what your husband means by a “first born” name. Has he offered any suggestions to you?

[name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] is a great name. It’s quiet, but it is definitely handsome and flows very well. For some reason, I associate the name [name_m]Joel[/name_m] with a sporty but intelligent, friendly soccer player, but this really has no reason behind it. If you can get your DH’s approval, I say go for it! You have great style.

I used to love [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and I still think it is sweet. At the same time, I understand where your hubby is coming from. He wants the baby’s name to embody all that it is to be a son, and [name_m]Joel[/name_m] may be too sweet for that.

Maybe something more traditionally masculine such as [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] or [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m].

I really like it - [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] is a strong, solid combo.

It’s a great combo, although I think I like it better reversed- [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Joel[/name_m].

I like the two names together it sounds lovely. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know what he means by first born?

I love the name [name_m]Joel[/name_m]! So masculine and strong sounding! [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] is incredibly handsome. For me, the only [name_m]Joel[/name_m] I know is actually the lead guitarist of my favourite band, [name_m]Lawson[/name_m], so he’s who I think of. I’ve met him before, and he’s definitely sweet, caring, and very friendly. Also, as I’ve gathered from interviews, he seems to be the most mature member of the band, and the more romantic of the four.

Some pictures of [name_m]Joel[/name_m] Peat (guitarist from [name_m]Lawson[/name_m]);

Sorry if I’m not much help!

I prefer [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Joel[/name_m]. [name_m]Joel[/name_m] is alright–makes me think of Dr. Fleishman from ‘Northern Exposure’.

I like [name_m]Joel[/name_m] a lot! A number of years ago I was dating a really attractive lifeguard named [name_m]Joel[/name_m] He was sweet, smart, and athletic.

I think [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] is very handsome! I always found [name_m]Joel[/name_m] a bit awkward to say, but then I met an absolutely adorable one year old with the name and I’ve been won over! They call him [name_u]Joey[/name_u] as a nn and it’s so cute!

[name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] is my brother’s name and has definitely worn well for him!

I think your partner means that he wants something that feels more special. I agree with other comments that [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Joel[/name_m] might suit him better. Maybe he is looking for a first that feels more regal? Ask him to make a list of names with “firstborn son” potential.

I think [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Joel[/name_m] is better than [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m]

I know what your husband means.

Would [name_m]Cole[/name_m], [name_u]Noel[/name_u], or [name_m]Lowell[/name_m] work?

[name_m]Josiah[/name_m] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] sound like firstborn names to me.

I absolutely love [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m], it’s a fine name, and great for a firstborn son.

I like [name_m]Joel[/name_m] for the reasons that you state but I also see your husband’s point about a first-born son. [name_m]Joel[/name_m] is sweet, short (1 syllable) and has "soft’ sound whereas I think your husband is looking for a strong, solid name that is at least two syllables. It is hard for me to picture a [name_m]Joel[/name_m] as a judge or CEO or President. [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Joel[/name_m] might solve the problem as [name_m]David[/name_m] has the hard sounds, is stronger than [name_m]Joel[/name_m], and is two syllables.

Names I think of as strong boy names

[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m]
[name_m]Gregory[/name_m]
[name_m]Donovan[/name_m]

Thanks for your help everyone!! Good thoughts indeed  I appreciate how some of you can see where DH is coming from (I can’t, haha!) so hopefully we can come to some sort of solution if [name_u]Baby[/name_u] is a boy! We seem to have less problems agreeing on girl names

I just found this old thread again - now my son [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] is nearly two  Once [name_m]Joel[/name_m] was born my husband agreed that was definitely his name and completely got over his feeling of it not being firstborn enough!
