I used to pronounce it like [name]Joe[/name]-hannah, but then I saw a TV show with a girl named [name]Johanna[/name] pronounced [name]Joe[/name]-hah-nuh, so that’s how I’ve pronounced it ever since. [name]Love[/name] the [name]Jo[/name]-hah-nuh pronunciation, not a huge fan of the [name]Jo[/name]-hannah one.
I voted for #2 and #3. I say both jo-han-uh and jo-hah-nuh.
I love the name.
The only [name]Johanna[/name] I’ve known pronounced it as jo-HA-nuh. I really like the name. Traditional, but not overexposed.
I said [name]Jo[/name]-hanna, but the only one I have known also went by [name]Jo[/name]-HAH-nuh and I thought [name]Jo[/name]-hanna looked the closest.
I find several of the pronunciations very pretty, and I love the name. I pronounce it [name]Jo[/name]-hannah
I voted for 1 and 3. It depends where you are in the world. Unless I knew the person was [name]German[/name] or similar, I would initially use #1 because I’m American. I only knew 1 [name]Joanna[/name] and I have liked the name since! I think it’s classic without being boring or overused.
I second exactly what leafitz said. I’ve know an Australian [name]Johanna[/name] pr. the first way and a [name]German[/name] [name]Johanna[/name] pr. the third way.
There’s an ‘h’ in there. I don’t understand why people would leave it out? The name is exactly like combining [name]Jo[/name] and [name]Hannah[/name].
For some reason, I say [name]Yo[/name]-haun-nuh, though I have no idea why. I’m not [name]German[/name] at all. That’s just my initial pronnunciation of the name, though I’m sure if I meet someone named [name]Johanna[/name] I would say “[name]Johanna[/name].”
I think it can be pronounced either [name]Jo[/name]-hanna or [name]Jo[/name]-anna. It works either way. Depends on the parent. I’m also from the Midwest which is probably why I’ve never heard of [name]Yo[/name]-Haun-[name]Nuh[/name] before. Coincidentally, my sister’s name is [name]Johnna[/name] ([name]John[/name]-a) and she gets every thing from [name]Joan[/name]-a to [name]Jo[/name]-anna to [name]Jo[/name]-[name]Hanna[/name]. It’s like no ones ever seen a feminine version of [name]John[/name] before, haha.
I say joe-HAH-nah, which wasn’t really an option, lol. yo-HAUN-ah would be my second choice, though.
I love this name, and I think spelling it [name]Johanna[/name] should help alleviate all the fuss about the pronunciation; however, names are funny that way! Personally, I say it ‘[name]Jo[/name]-[name]Hannah[/name]’. I think to pronounce it ‘[name]Jo[/name]-Hahn-[name]Ah[/name]’, it should/would be spelled [name]Johana[/name] (Sort of like the difference in sound so often found with the names [name]Anna[/name] / [name]Ana[/name], for example). I am actually not too fond of the name [name]Joanna[/name], but that is probably mainly because of a former association that is not too pleasant. I would NEVER even think to call a [name]Johanna[/name] by the name [name]Joanna[/name]–to me, they are COMPLETELY different names.
I have the prn [name]Jo[/name]-hanna but but the h is a little soft, like it’s not absent like in [name]Joanna[/name] but it’s not screaming [name]Hannah[/name] either. I can understand [name]Jo[/name]-hahn-a but don’t think it’s default for me.
I have a huge crush on this name!
