Jorja

I put post in baby names about “[name_f]Jinger[/name_f] but no [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]” and I mentioned [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] as an alternative Duggar name. In doing so I have renewed my interest in the spelling (I used to love it) I have [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] on my list anyway. I would replace [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] with [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] but keep [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] as it is. [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] would probably end up with the NN JayJay.

What do you think of the spelling of [name_f]Jorja[/name_f]?

Honestly?

I think it’s awful.

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] is beautiful, why ruin it?

Sorry but [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] is as bad as [name_f]Jinger[/name_f] in my spelling book. I know the spelling is popular in Australia but it’s horrid. It’s just a modern invention and phonetic mess and I don’t consider it a female spelling of [name_m]Jorge[/name_m].

I know a [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] but yeah, it’s pretty bad, I know it’s hispanic, but really, not [name_f]EVERY[/name_f] exotic/cultural name is a wise choice. [name_f]Jinger[/name_f] is an Americanized name. [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] is hispanic. Wiktoria is Polish (i think) - but none of them are really good choices outside(or even within) their countries.

really? Aww… I think it’s cute! As far as I’m aware [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] isn’t particularly popular in the UK. I know berries tend to have strong feelings towards phonic spellings and messing with spellings in general. :frowning:

It’s sort of cute, but, the [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] I know is 8, and constantly has her name mispronounced and misspelled. As someone who has at least 100 variant spellings of their first name, it’s very annoying to have to constantly correct people. I guess a [name_f]Jorja[/name_f]'s ok where I live - in a town of less than 2000, we have more kids with yewneek names than I can count now (and yet, when I went to school at the same elementary school as little [name_f]Jorja[/name_f], the ‘weirdest’ names in my classes were [name_f]Jami[/name_f] (girl, pn [name_u]Jamie[/name_u]), [name_u]Haley/name_u, [name_u]Skyler/name_u and [name_u]Dustin[/name_u].).

As for UK stats by country:

[name_f]England[/name_f]&[name_m]Wales[/name_m] - 443rd with 102 births; Jorgie is 281st with 175
[name_f]Scotland[/name_f] - 254th with 18 births; Jorgie is 159th with 29
Northern [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] - [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] does not rank within the top 300, but Jorgie is 172nd with 11 births.

the reason Jorgie is relatively popular in the UK is because there is a soap actress called Jorgie [name_u]Porter[/name_u].
I live in Northern [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] and it doesn’t rank so that’s kind of a good thing.

I would pronounce [name_u]Haley[/name_u] as Hay-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]. Or are you a [name_m]Hal[/name_m]-EE?

Hay-lee is mine, but I get [name_m]Hal[/name_m]-EE all the time. Not to mention the thousands of spelling variants, if it’s a form of [name_u]Haley[/name_u], I’ve likely been called it. I actually had one woman at work, who, after reading my name tag, insisted that my name was spelled wrong.

[name_f]My[/name_f] little sister is a [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] and I’ve always loved her name; my initial reaction is that [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] is hideous. I have no idea why it’s so popular in the UK (445 is very high for a country that tends to be conservative in it’s spellings)

The argument that it’s a Hispanic spelling is irrelevant considering you’re not pronouncing it HORE-hah (would be a bit unfortunate in an English speaking country anyway, not to mention the fact nobody in Northern [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] would even think of saying it that way).

You’re right, no one in the UK would call [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] “Hore-hah”, I doubt it would even register with them that it was a possible pronunciation.
I think if anyone called my daughter a “whore” they’d get a fist to the throat!

Definitely [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] or [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]!

[name_f]My[/name_f] initial reaction was to pronounce it sort of like like [name_m]Jorge[/name_m], with J’s pronounced like H. It didn’t even occur to me that it would pronounced [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] until reading the thread.

I don’t really like it.
I like Jorgia though

I agree, it’s really bad. It doesn’t really make sense pronounced like [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] but, even though pronouncing it as thought it is a feminine version of [name_m]Jorge[/name_m] makes more sense, Hor-huh is even worse. Stick with [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
