I actually taught a little [name_u]Josie[/name_u] when I was working at a daycare - I’ve always pronounced it as [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-zee.
I actually wasn’t aware until now that people don’t all say jo-see!
Ditto @stellarevolution I have known a couple of Josies and have never noticed anyone pronounce it as jo-zee. I would definitely say jo-see, like in Never Been Kissed, haha
I always say jo-zee. Honestly, even if it was a nickname for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], I’d still be likely to slip up and say jo-zee.
Theoretically I get that it can be jo-see, but I think it’s so easy and natural to say jo-zee (see [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Posy[/name_f], dozy etc.) that even with the S you’d get the Z most of the time. It takes more effort for me to say S - I have to be thinking about it and consciously trying to sound the S sound as opposed to the Z sound - and there’s not really that much difference anyway.
Oh man! [name_u]Josie[/name_u] Grossie!! I forgot about that!
Definitely agree with this.
Again, I had no idea there were people who didn’t say it as [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-see!
Although I do see the point about [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Posy[/name_f] etc. I’ve just only ever known [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-sees.
I have heard both, but I myself prefer the softer [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-see.
I actually use both prn. but mostly [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-see, which is what I voted far.
Jo-zee.
The s in Josephine makes a ‘z’ sound, so it’s the most logical.
Although I think the difference between the two (jo-zee, jo-see), is very subtle.
I’ve never said [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] with ‘z’ sound nor have I heard it said that way, so that’s interesting. I also don’t say [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] with a ‘z’ sound. Maybe it’s an accent thing?
I haven’t explained it very well.
What I meant was, the S in [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]), makes a sound closer to the ‘zee’ sound of [name_u]Josie[/name_u], than it does the ‘see’. If they were pronounced jos-ef and jos-eh-feen, but they’re not.
That’s what I thought you meant, but again… I say jo-suf and jo-suh-feen. I haven’t ever heard those said with a ‘z’ sound. I’ve only heard [name_u]Josie[/name_u] with a ‘z’ sound, which is usually said in a different syllable than when said with a ‘s’ sound, j-OHZ-ee rather than j-OH-see.
[name_u]Jo[/name_u]-zee for me, I have not heard [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-see where I’m at before.
I pronounce [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] more like a z too. I don’t feel like there’s a right or wrong way.
Me too! I was like “[name_u]Josie[/name_u]? Is there another way to pronounce it?” lol.
I say [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (gorgeous by the way) with a z sound, so it would be the same for [name_u]Josie[/name_u].
I’m another one who did not know there was any way except Joh-see for this. I’ve only ever come across both [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_u]Josie[/name_u] pronounced with an s.
