[name]Hi[/name] all,
I love Biblical/Hebrew names for boys, especially [name]Levi[/name] and [name]Samson[/name], but I’ve recently fallen in love with another Biblical name- [name]Judas[/name]. My family is devoutly Catholic and I don’t know how they’d take the infamous namesake part. Is [name]Judas[/name] off-limits? What do you think?
Simple solution: talk to them about it.
Plan-B: Consider “[name]JUDE[/name]”.
what about judah? depends on how important your family is. i wouldn’t care too much if my family didn’t like a name but i’d rather not offend them, you know?
Sorry, but I don’t think this name is worth the issues it would likely cause, especially with your devoutly Catholic family. It’s one thing if your family just didn’t care for the style, etc., of a name you had chosen-- in that case, I would say they could deal with it. I think it’s another thing if the name could potentially cause offense, as this name could. I suppose it depends how close you are with your family… with mine, I certainly wouldn’t want to risk the offense. If you need suggestions for similar names, I’m sure the Berries can oblige
Oof. Yeah, [name]Judas[/name] is going to be a tough sell to the Catholic family. It might even be seen as a smack in the face…
[name]Ah[/name] well, I agree it would be foolish to start such an emotional conflict over a name. :’( But I’m sure I can find some less controversial Biblical names, with your help of course! I’m not keen on the more popular Hebrew names, like [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Jude[/name], [name]Caleb[/name], etc because they feel overused to me. My favorites are more along the lines of [name]Levi[/name], [name]Samson[/name], [name]Cain[/name], and [name]Silas[/name]. Does anyone know any unusual, but not weird, Biblical names?
Although this name doesn’t offend me personally, I know it offends a lot of other Christians and Catholics.
I also love Biblical names. [name]How[/name] about…
[name]Judah[/name] (Great compromise!)
[name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Abram[/name] - My personal favorite
[name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Malachi[/name]
[name]Micah[/name]
[name]How[/name] about [name]Gideon[/name]? That’s my kid’s name, so I’m partial.
This is so funny, I was just speaking about this name to my best friend. I like [name]Jude[/name] and [name]Judah[/name] but I love the sound of [name]Judas[/name] a lot. As a [name]Christian[/name] I know I probably wouldn’t use it but I think that since there was another apostle with the name [name]Judas[/name] it shouldn’t be totally taboo.
A little bit of me thinks that it might be like naming your child [name]Adolf[/name], [name]Manson[/name] or Gacey. [name]Even[/name] though there are surely nice people with these names the one bad asociation is so bad it eclipses all others.
There’s another post on the Boys’ Names board about [name]Judas[/name] – you should check it out. (Sorry, I don’t know how to link to other posts.) I posted my opinion there, but I’ll summarize here: I’m also Catholic (from a fairly devout family) and would not in the least be offended if I met a [name]Judas[/name]. I can see the issues, obviously, but would argue that there are other lesser-known Judases in the Bible, and it won’t lose that negative association until people start using it again. I do not think it’s like naming your child [name]Adolf[/name] or [name]Manson[/name] at all – someone on the other post likened it to [name]Benedict[/name], which I think is a better parallel.
I’d talk to your family about it (or just one family member, maybe, if you don’t want it to be common knowledge) and see what they think. If you really love it … I’d consider using it.
From your list, I love [name]Samson[/name] – that’s also on our list. Another option similar to [name]Judas[/name] would be [name]Lucas[/name].
I like [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Abram[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name] a lot, so thank you for all your suggestions! and catheyc [name]Lucas[/name] is another one of my favorite names!
@i.heart.nerds thats exactly how I feel! I like [name]Judah[/name], but [name]Judas[/name] just sounds so much better to me. I wish that a few positive namesakes would come along, but, for now, I think I’ll stick to finding similar names that I like just as much.
[name]Glad[/name] you liked [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Abram[/name]!
[name]Abram[/name] is the name reserved for our second son, if we’re lucky enough
Great name!
