I really like the name [name_m]Julian[/name_m]. I probably wouldn’t use it, but I still like it. I like it for boys and girls. Would it work on a girl? I like Juilenne, but it’s a cut used in cooking, and it’s not necessarily a bad association, it’s not a good one either. [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Julian[/name_m] work for a girl?
I don’t think it does work on a girl. I don’t like boys’ names on girls but beyond that, [name_f]Julienne[/name_f] is such a known female variation that people would automatically assume that’s how she spells her name. I think for the child the cooking term would be less weird than having a boys’ name and always having your name misspelled by everyone.
But there is:
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Julianna[/name_f]/[name_f]Juliana[/name_f]
[name_u]Julianne[/name_u]
[name_u]Julie[/name_u]
I have a son named [name_m]Julian[/name_m]. I love the name so much, it is so strong and classic to me. There are so many great female variants that don’t take away from the male version of the name.
[name_m]Julian[/name_m] actually has historically been used on girls back in medieval times. From Behind the Name: “This name has been used in [name_f]England[/name_f] since the Middle Ages, at which time it was also a feminine name (from [name_f]Juliana[/name_f], eventually becoming [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]).”
More recently it was [name_u]Julianne[/name_u] [name_m]Moore[/name_m]'s character’s name in the movie Children of Men. I say if you want to bring [name_m]Julian[/name_m]-on-a-girl back, go for it. Or if you like [name_f]Julienne[/name_f] but it’s too Food Network, maybe you could spell it [name_m]Julien[/name_m]?
It’s all boy for me. As other posters have suggested, there are many girl names that are similar that would work.
My feelings on using names for the opposite sex is, if you wouldn’t use a girl name on a boy, than don’t use a boy name on a girl, but that’s just my opinion. At the end of the day you can use whatever name you want to use regardless of other’s opinions.
