Full disclosure - I am not American. However, I looked into the US stats on [name_f]Juliana[/name_f].

It’s number #147, so outside of the top 100 names. For a reference, the 147th most popular name for boys is [name_m]King[/name_m]. I don’t think anybody would say the name [name_m]King[/name_m] is too popular, or expect more than one in a class.

So while it is true that [name_f]Carmela[/name_f] is less popular than [name_f]Juliana[/name_f], but I don’t think your decision should be based on that alone - most people with a top 50 name won’t have other namesharers in their class, let alone a top 200 name.

That’s not to say I dislike [name_f]Carmela[/name_f] - I don’t! If it has more meaning to you or you prefer it, then of course, you should pick it. It’s very pretty and has good nickname potential, if you want that sort of thing. If I had to choose a favourite… it’s close, but I do prefer [name_f]Juliana[/name_f]. The ‘ana’ ending just gets me!

Thanks for asking for our help

Hello! To answer your question about [name_f]Juliana[/name_f], I don’t think it’s too popular at all. It’s outside the Top 100. I’ve only met one [name_f]Juliana[/name_f], and the name is not currently on the rise. Names like [name_f]Julia[/name_f] and [name_u]Julie[/name_u] are also down in popularity, and while [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/[name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is rising, it is still not extremely popular. I don’t think you’ll have too much of a problem with the -ana ending, either, as the only -ana names on the rise are [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliana[/name_f], and I think the sounds are dissimilar enough that it isn’t too repetitive. However, that said, I prefer [name_f]Carmela[/name_f] stylistically. There’s something so elegant and beautiful about it, and it would be truly unique. Plus, I love that it’s a family name.

I’m a teacher in the U.S. and I have only ever taught (or even met) one [name_f]Juliana[/name_f]. I think of it as a lovely but underused name. I also know exactly one [name_f]Carmela[/name_f], who is in her forties.

I prefer [name_f]Juliana[/name_f].

[name_f]Carmela[/name_f] for me! I think it’s striking, distinctive and feels like a perfect “sweet spot” name: instantly recognisable, not at all weird or dated, but barely used.

Nothing wrong with [name_f]Juliana[/name_f] but, personally, the -ana/-iana ending puts me off. Not only is it a pretty popular sound in girls’ names right now ([name_f]Eliana[/name_f], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], plus various “smoosh” type names) but it just runs contrary to my general taste, feeling quite frilly and elaborate. Also, the repeated J initial would probably be a downside for me.

These are both good choices, but a few more ideas just in case: [name_f]Rafaela[/name_f], [name_f]Gabriela[/name_f], [name_f]Paloma[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Julieta[/name_f], [name_f]Violeta[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalba[/name_f]…

I prefer [name_f]Carmela[/name_f]! It has a lovely sound

Thanks everyone for your input!

@[name_f]Erin[/name_f] [name_f]Beth[/name_f], do you mind me asking what grade you teach? I love hearing teacher insights on names!
