Juliet vs Juliette

DH and I are tossing around a lot of potential girl names and started talking about [name_f]Juliet/name_f tonight. Which spelling do you prefer?

Our DD is [name_f]Violet[/name_f], so I’m also trying to decide if it’s too matchy with her name. I think I would lean towards [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] to make is stand apart more from [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Thoughts?

I much prefer [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is a bit over-the-top; like names like [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Violette[/name_f], I find the look of [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] more attractive. I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] make a nice sibling set. Personally I would avoid another T ending with any future children after that…unless you would want to make it a theme.

I prefer [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. It looks more classic and simple.

I also prefer [name_f]Juliet[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]!

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] was good enough for [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m], so it’s good enough for me.

Seriously though, I think it sounds sleeker and ages better when spelled [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. I agree with pps that [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] just feels like overkill.

I should also note that I pronounce them differently—[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is JOO-lee-eht/JOO-lyeht while [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is joo-lee-EHT.

This. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], dislike the extra frills on [name_f]Juliette[/name_f].

However, I personally do find [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/te and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] a little too close for sisters, regardless of how you spell it.

I prefer [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. I generally prefer [name_m]French[/name_m] forms, but [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] seems unnecessarily frou-frou. I like the simplicity of [name_f]Juliet[/name_f].

I would tend to say that yes, [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is too similar to [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I have a TON of -et favorites for both genders, but I don’t think I could do two in one sibset–at least, two on the same gender (like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], or [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]). I’m not sure I could say no to [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u], but it somehow seems less matchy when they’d be brother and sister and not two sisters. It feels about as matchy as [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] or [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]–while do-able, they seem a bit much, to me. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] are stylistically very well-paired, though. I would personally opt to use [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] as a MN. That way you’d have [name_f]Violet[/name_f] ____ and, say, [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], and then [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] don’t seem anywhere near as matchy.

I will always prefer [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] to the anglicized form [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. I feel it looks more complete and I prefer the pronunciation. I also enjoy [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] but vastly prefer [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]. I enjoy how feminine and girly it is, nothing wrong with that. Both are great though it’s really just a personal preference. The similar endings on [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] would bother me but I am sort of a perfectionist. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] & [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] would be better but that’s just me, I don’t think it’s a big issue.

Love [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], dislike the extra frills on [name_f]Juliette[/name_f].

However, I personally do find [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/te and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] a little too close for sisters, regardless of how you spell it.

Totally agree

I prefer [name_f]Juliet[/name_f].

I used to prefer [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], but now I’ve come around to [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], especially because I recently saw a post that suggested [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] nn [name_m]Jett[/name_m], which I unexpectedly fell in love with.

I like both spellings and pronounce them the same way. But with [name_f]Violet[/name_f], I prefer [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. They look balanced and evenly matched. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is not as visually appealing in my opinion. However, their names will not be written together all that often, so I think you should pick whichever spelling you prefer independently of how it looks with [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (especially as people have differing opinions on which spelling fits better). Beautiful name either way. Good luck!

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]! [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] looks too fussy to me. And I think the [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] goes perfectly with [name_f]Violet[/name_f]

I prefer the simplicity of [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], but then I also prefer [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] over [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] over [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f].

The one exception would be [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]. I vastly prefer [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] to [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]/[name_u]Vivien[/name_u].

I think [name_f]Juliet/name_f and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are too similar sounding for sibling names

Both spellings are beautiful so you can’t go wrong. [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] obviously has much more of the Shakespearean connotation than [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] does which may or may not be a bad thing depending on your outlook. I agree with some posters that [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] can be over the top, but it depends on the middle name you choose. [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_u]Simone[/name_u] looks understated and lovely (at least in my opinion) whereas [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] looks a little much. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] are definitely similar names so that may be something you want to take into consideration as well; [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] may be a better pair than [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] since the two names are less similar that way. Also, you may want to take heritage into account - if you have English or Italian ancestry, [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] can be used to honor that, whereas [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is the [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling. Either way, it’s a beautiful name. Good luck!
