[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Christians so I love the name [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] and recently found out about it’s possible origins all [name_u]Julie[/name_u] names if I’m not mistaken derive from the name [name_m]Julius[/name_m] and the name [name_m]Julius[/name_m] meaning and history is From a [name_m]Roman[/name_m] family name that was possibly derived from Greek ἴουλος meaning “downy-bearded”. Alternatively, it could be related to the name of the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] god [JUPITER]This was a prominent patrician family of [name_u]Rome[/name_u], who claimed descent from the mythological Julus, son of [Aeneas] Its most notable member was [name_m]Gaius[/name_m] [name_m]Julius[/name_m] [name_m]Caesar[/name_m], who gained renown as a military leader for his clever conquest of Gaul. After a civil war he became the dictator of the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Republic, but was eventually stabbed to death in the senate. Although this name was borne by several early [saints] including a pope, it was rare during the Middle Ages. It was revived in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] and [name_f]France[/name_f] during the Renaissance, and was subsequently imported to [name_f]England[/name_f]. And I’m wondering if as a [name_u]Christian[/name_u] I should be naming a girl [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] since it’s name origins are possibly from a false god let me know what you think ? And if you can provide scripture please do so
Honestly I think it’s fine. The roots aren’t super clear and it’s not like you’re naming your kid [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] or [name_m]Judas[/name_m], something that would turn a few heads. It isn’t really bad I don’t think. The name could also mean youthful, so there’s that.
I never would have thought of any of those associations. I think you may just be overthinking it! [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is beautiful!
Tbh, you’re way overthinking this. I think it’s totally fine!
If it makes you feel any better, there was a [name_u]Christian[/name_u] woman mentioned by [name_m]Paul[/name_m] in Romans 16 named [name_f]Julia[/name_f].
I think you’re overthinking this.
This! I can think of many early Christians with names related to Greek/Roman gods (my first thought was [name_m]Apollos[/name_m], which I happen to adore!). I don’t think anyone, [name_u]Christian[/name_u] or no, would assume [name_u]Christian[/name_u] parents are naming their daughter [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/Juliette after [name_u]Jupiter[/name_u] of all things. I didn’t even know [name_m]Julius[/name_m] and [name_u]Jupiter[/name_u] were related at ALL to be honest.
I’m all for avoiding names from other religions (without an equally strong [name_u]Christian[/name_u] association, as with [name_m]Apollos[/name_m]!), but I think you have nothing to worry about. Plus, [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] 40:30-31 would make a great life verse:
“ Though youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
Yet those who wait for the [name_m]Lord[/name_m]
[name_m]Will[/name_m] gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.”
I honestly wouldn’t sweat it. You’ll get more [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] references than anything, I think.
I think [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is fine. I knew several [name_u]Christian[/name_u] girls growing up with a [name_u]Juli[/name_u]- name.
IMO you are overthinking this. Most people, [name_u]Christian[/name_u] or not, are not going to be thinking about the origin of the name when meeting or interacting with your daughter. They are going to be thinking about your daughter and the person that she is. Your daughter will make the name you give her, the name will not make her!
I agree with the other posters. I really don’t think anyone, [name_u]Christian[/name_u] or not, is going to associate [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] with the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] deity [name_u]Jupiter[/name_u]. Most women in the world who have the name [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] are probably either [name_u]Christian[/name_u] themselves or from culturally [name_u]Christian[/name_u] families. If you’re still concerned I would suggest asking your church leader about it.
Honestly, no one’s going to go diving back that far into the name! It’s all fine. [name_f]My[/name_f] first association was [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], actually! And even if they did associate it with [name_u]Jupiter[/name_u], it would be the planet before the mythological god.
