Juniper vs Laurel?

What is your first impression of [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] and [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]? Which is your favorite?

On sound alone I lean toward [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. It feels sweet and spunky to me. But the name has exploded in popularity only recently. It has never been in the top 1000 before 2011 (I believe) and I worry that it will be too tied to this era and sound dated in the future, the way I think of the 80s and 90s when I hear names like [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] and [name_f]Jessica[/name_f].

On the other hand, [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] has a longer history of use and I love the sound of it too. I don’t worry about it being too tied to a certain era. But I do worry that it isn’t as unique as [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] because it so similar to names like [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] these names take a little bit of [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]'s magic and make it seem more common?

Thanks for your help!

I prefer [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]! [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] makes me think of the Yanny [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] debate from 2016? I also love the nn [name_u]June[/name_u] for [name_u]Juniper[/name_u].

Personally I prefer [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]. I think [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] is a very classic choice and I think she deserves a revival she’s underused despite having a sweet sound, great associations with [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] trees and to peace/success with the [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] wreath. Yes [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] is similar to [name_f]Laura[/name_f]/Lauren but both names are dying in popularity. I have not met a baby [name_f]Laura[/name_f]/Lauren the youngest [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] I know is one 5 year old girl so for me I don’t see this similarity as an issue and I don’t think [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] will be lost in a crowd of [name_f]Laura[/name_f]’s or [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]’s as there isn’t one. [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] is lovely.

In relation to [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] personally she isn’t a favourite and I just hear ā€˜Jew nipper’ which is awkward especially as someone of Jewish descent. I prefer [name_u]June[/name_u] or [name_f]Juno[/name_f].

I prefer [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]. [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is fine but I prefer the harder ending of [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] (or [name_u]June[/name_u] for the same reason, I suppose, but that’s a very different name!)

If [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is your preferred name though, which it sounds like it is, I think using it and trying not to worry about what it’ll conjure up in 30 years time is a better idea than using a name you don’t like as much because you think it’ll age better.

I never used to worry about how names would age, but I think I’ve been scarred by the whole [name_f]Karen[/name_f] situation lol. Unfortunately, there is no predicting the memes of the future

Juniper is my favourite. It’s definitely more modern, but I honestly can’t think of any nature names that have become tied to a particular decade. Classic/vintage [name_u]June[/name_u] or spunky [name_f]Juno[/name_f]/Juni are also great nicknames.

Laurel is sweet, but I do feel it lacks the strength and energy of [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. While uncommon, it does remind me of [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]/Laura of which I have known so many over the years.

I’d not worry about trends etc and go with what you love the most.

I prefer [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] over [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] soundwise and it has more personality (energy) to me, both are lovely names though. I think [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] as a combo would be nice.

I like [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] the best  [name_f]Juni[/name_f] is a super cute nn as well. To me, [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] is a really old fashioned sounding name but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

I much prefer [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. Feisty and full of character. I’m not keen on [name_u]Laurel[/name_u], a bit fussy and dated where I live - Australia. I do like the classic [name_f]Laura[/name_f] though.

I prefer the fresh sound of [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. Not the biggest fan of [name_u]Laurel[/name_u], though I do like [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]

I prefer [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]. It has an whimsical, nature-y feel without being over-the-top. And it’s just lovely besides!

I also just don’t really care for the sound of [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] as a name for a child, personally. :woman_shrugging:t3:

I don’t think those names take away from [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]. [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] is really beautiful. I would pick it over [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], mostly for the fact it feels less trendy.

I like them both but have a slight preference for [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]. It actually seems fresher and more unexpected than [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] at the moment, while still feeling classic. I Would say [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is the more spunky of the two though if that’s what you’re looking for.

I have a preference toward [name_u]Laurel[/name_u], it feels timeless and strong but light and whimsical at the same time? I also like [name_f]Lori[/name_f]/ [name_f]Laura[/name_f] nicknames. I think [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is a nice name, but I don’t find it as timeless/ classic as [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] and I prefer [name_u]June[/name_u] more.

Juniper and [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] would make an awesome sister-set! I do slightly prefer [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] as I heard it first when I was kid in a book I read and Imprinted on it a bit before it was popular but [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] is lovely too.

I used to LOVE [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], until… I met an adult with the name. [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] herself was lovely, but I work at the hospital and calling out for an adult nurse named [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] just didn’t sit right. I guess to me maybe it’s one of those ā€œcutesyā€ names I have a hard time imagining on adults. I love [name_u]June[/name_u] with [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] as a nn, though. I do think that [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is more trendy than [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] as well, but I think to non-namenerds they will both be unexpected and refreshing.

Laurel is lovely- warm and familiar without being popular.

I prefer [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]! Whereas [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] makes me think of the plant and weirdly [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] doesn’t.:woman_shrugging: Also I like how [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] can be [name_f]Juni[/name_f] or [name_f]Juno[/name_f] as a nn.

Hi there.

This is tough! I really like them both. Here are my thoughts-

Juniper-It really has exploded in popularity. I know three, plus one [name_u]Junot[/name_u] (pronounced [name_f]Juno[/name_f].) [name_u]Junot[/name_u] & one of the Junipers is a boy, too. However, it is a super fun name. It is totally sweet & spunky & has great nns.

Laurel-This seems way more interesting than [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] on a baby these days. It feels timeless. It has beautiful floral imagery, but is a much softer quieter name than [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. It’s smart & kind feeling. But if you want to spunk it up a little bit, the nn [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is really adorable.

Sooo, I feel the same way that you do. I slightly prefer the sound of [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. But I like everything else about [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] more if that makes sense.

Hope this helps.
