Just a far-fetched negative association or not?

So I’ve stayed away from the name [name_f]Iris[/name_f] even though I think it’s a lovely name because every time I look at it all I can think of is [name_f]Isis[/name_f]. Am I the only one and just being over-sensitive or do you also have that problem?

I honestly haven’t ever made that connection, and I actually still quite like the name [name_f]Isis[/name_f]. The nice thing is there are tons of other floral names out there is [name_f]Iris[/name_f] still has that negative connotation in your mind!

I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f], so I’ve thought about it a lot and I never thought of [name_f]Isis[/name_f].

But just as I cannot convince my husband that just because a [name_m]Miles[/name_m] stepped on his hand in pre-school and laughed isn’t a good reason to nix [name_m]Miles[/name_m] from our list, no one can really convince you to ignore a negative association. If it bothers you, it bothers you, and there’s lots of baggage-free names out there.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] though they are one letter away I don’t think [name_f]Isis[/name_f] with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I have other good associations with [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and I really don’t think it’s unusable.

They are similar, but I don’t think they’re too much alike. The R in [name_f]Iris[/name_f] sounds very different from an S. If it was, say, Ithis, I think it might be too close. But the R is a very different sound and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is a very well-known and established name, so I think it’s fine.
As a side note, I think [name_f]Isis[/name_f] is a beautiful name and it’s so sad that it’s been made unusable by the horrible group! I’ve known several women named [name_f]Isis[/name_f], all lovely, and I feel so sorry for them that their name now has this terrible association. [name_f]Isis[/name_f] is a really cool mythological character as well, so all around a bad thing happened to a good name.

I don’t think people would associate [name_f]Iris[/name_f] with [name_f]Isis[/name_f]. Though they sound kind of similar, [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is well known enough (though not very common) as a name, word, and flower that this association is very small. I think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is a lovely name though

I like [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I think of the flower, a sweet old lady name that’s fresh again, and the iris of the eye (which I don’t think is a bad thing at all!) I don’t jump to [name_f]Isis[/name_f] even though the spelling is close because they sound different enough, especially with the r, and have a completely different feel. I say them a little differently too, with a longer pause after the first sound in [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] AYE–ris vs [name_f]Isis[/name_f] eye-sis

I don’t think most people would associate [name_f]Iris[/name_f] with [name_f]Isis[/name_f], but I’m a huge over-thinker, and it pops into my head whenever I think about the name [name_f]Iris[/name_f]–so much so that I no longer like this beautiful name. I’m on the same boat as you lol.

I’m actually with you, I can’t even consider [name_f]Iris[/name_f] because of the similarity even though it’s a reach. I think it’s still a pretty name and don’t necessarily make the connection when it’s spoken aloud but it’s still there in the back of my mind.

I dont begrudge anyone else using it or anything but I couldn’t consider it for myself.

No, I don’t think of [name_f]Iris[/name_f] as being too close to [name_f]Isis[/name_f] personally. I do, however, think of eyeballs more than flowers when I hear [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

I didn’t make the association. I think of the flower. It’s very usable [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

I think you’re overthinking it. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is a lovely name!

This has always been my probably with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. As much as I want to like it and can appreciate others using it, I can’t look past it enough to use it myself.

I think that’s a stretch anyway - people know what irises are and that will be the association. And also, by the time a child named [name_f]Iris[/name_f] now grows up, [name_f]ISIS[/name_f] is going to be an obscure historical reference, not something that is on the forefront of anyone’s mind, especially not kids. The goddess [name_f]Isis[/name_f] will be just as strong an association.

I think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is beautiful! Never thought once that it sounded like [name_f]Isis[/name_f]. I always think of the little cute actress [name_f]Iris[/name_f] Apatow.

I hadn’t made any mental connection between those names & to my eye & ear they’re different enough that I have no issues w/[name_f]Iris[/name_f]. And as a pp mentioned, I tend to call [name_f]ISIS[/name_f] Daesh because it’s an insulting term & the group thoroughly deserves it. We actually have a cat named [name_f]Isis[/name_f]; she’s a tortoiseshell & looks very Egyptian, & we were watching Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] when we got her, so she’s named after [name_m]Robert[/name_m]'s dog.

I see them as 2 different names and I prefer [name_f]Isis[/name_f] over [name_f]Iris[/name_f].
People HEAR names more often than they see them and neither one of these has a very lyrical sound.
Eye-risk or Aye-sis…I like the one that sounds like aye-Sis.

I’ve never made that connection with [name_f]Iris[/name_f] myself. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is a lovely name.

(I adore [name_f]Isis[/name_f]! It’s a pity it’s now become such an undesirable name with such negative connotations - such a beautiful name)
