After posting all the polls before [name]Christmas[/name] I think we have our list at least cut in half. The final four standing are [name]August[/name]/us, [name]Mathias[/name], [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Leopold[/name]…[name]Everett[/name] would be in the finals but we just learned that someone from our church just used it as well as a friend that my husband grew up with. That makes me nervous of course about popularity especially in my area.
I still have reserves with each of the names…if anyone wants to alleviate some of my concerns or help me narrow it down further i would very much appreciate it. Last name sounds like Castle and siblings are In my signature.
[name]August[/name]- I love [name]August[/name], husband prefers [name]Augustus[/name]. [name]Augustus[/name] feels long to me and I prefer [name]August[/name] more with [name]Conrad[/name] and [name]Nolan[/name]. Husband doesn’t like that [name]August[/name] is a month (even though I’ve explained that the month is named after the person). I worry about [name]August[/name] and ‘[name]June[/name]’ together. I love [name]June[/name] and [name]Gus[/name] however…
[name]Mathias[/name]- probably my favorite at the moment…not my husbands though. He said he could learn to love it but I’d prefer that he love it now or I feel guilty. This is my grandpa’s grandpa’s name and the first in my family to come over from Germany so it has a lot of significance to me. I also like the strong sound of it with a soft sound in the middle and not easily nicknameable as both of our other boys go by their full name. [name]Will[/name] people have trouble pronouncing?
[name]Atticus[/name]- I’m scared [name]Atticus[/name] will sound trendy in a few years or old hipster style? I also dislike the nickname [name]Atti[/name]. Other than that I heart it. I’ve read it on several blogs that it could be like [name]Harper[/name] in the rising and from the same bloke, etc etc.
[name]Leopold[/name]- I really think [name]Leopold[/name] goes great with the siblings and I like the sound and meaning. I worry that since its a little more clunky to say that he will only be called [name]Leo[/name]…and I’m not keen on the popularity of [name]Leo[/name]. Yet I love [name]Leo[/name]. Yikes!!
Im happy we got it down to 4/5 names but still worried that its going to be too many to choose between once baby arrives if we have a boy. I could have the baby any day now!
I think [name]Leopold[/name] is the one best suited to your sibling names, he just seems to fit in a way that [name]August[/name], [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Mathias[/name] don’t.
I think you are right re the popularity of [name]Atticus[/name], I think it is part of the zeitgeist now but will seem a bit passé quite soon.
[name]August[/name]/us is a wonderful name but I envision it alongside siblings named [name]Bertram[/name] and [name]Henry[/name] rather than the slightly more unusual names you have already used.
[name]Mathias[/name] would be my second choice for you, such significant meaning and I think it is easy to pronounce. It sounds really good with brother [name]Conrad[/name] for some reason!
I prefer [name]Augustus[/name] and [name]Augustin[/name], but agree that [name]August[/name] is a better fit. The [name]August[/name] & [name]June[/name] thing is noticable, but people might just think it to themselves and then move on… it’s no biggie.
[name]Atticus[/name] I’m truly not a fan of.
[name]Leopold[/name] I adore and think it’s great with your other names
[name]Mathias[/name] is OK, I prefer it spelled [name]Matthias[/name].
I think [name]August[/name] nn [name]Gus[/name] is great
I feel like if you are going with full names [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]August[/name] or nicknames [name]June[/name] and [name]Gus[/name] you don’t notice the month thing at all. If you were going to call him [name]August[/name] most of the time, then it will be more noticeable.
I also like [name]Mathias[/name]
I am not a fan of [name]Atticus[/name] - I feel like its very trendy right now and might seem dated later on. And I’m also personally not a fan of [name]Leopold[/name], for no reason in particular.
Wow, that is crazy! We have [name]Mathias[/name] on our list because it’s the name of DH’s great-great-grandfather, the first to come over from Germany!
The [name]German[/name] pronunciation is “mah-TEE-us,” but it can also be pronounced “mah-[name]TY[/name]-us.” If we have a baby [name]Mathias[/name], we will pronounce it the latter way and his nickname will be “[name]Ty[/name]” or “Tias.”
Your other names I love too, with the exception of [name]Atticus[/name], for the reasons you are hesitant (too hipster/trendy/will be dated). “[name]Gus[/name]” and “[name]Leo[/name]” are adorable. But I think [name]Mathias[/name] should be strongly in the running as well.
[name]Lori[/name]- that is a symmetry in the boys’ names that I’ve never paid attention to! Pretty cool observation. [name]Oscar[/name] could grow on me but I’d rather not have a name that ends with the R sound like [name]Juniper[/name]. I wonder how many other names fit this criteria. Thank you!
Titch- thanks for your input. I’m happy it’s not just me that feels the same way about [name]Atticus[/name]. It would absolutely bother me if that’s what it becomes. I can see where you’re coming from with [name]August[/name]…the other minor issue is that its used for girls also whereas my other boys’s names are not…but I still love the name through the reservations.
Lizabethm- thank you for your thoughts on the [name]June[/name]/[name]August[/name] situation. I think I tend to over think things sometimes…baby names for sure! But it’s just such a big decision
Wow, that IS crazy!! [name]Love[/name] it! Does your dh know what year he came over? From what I’ve heard, our [name]Mathias[/name] was pronounced with the soft ‘th’ sound in the middle and was even called [name]Math[/name] for short. I’m not keen on [name]Math[/name] since I say it more like Muth instead of [name]Math[/name] but I could see Thy or Thias being an option for home-use nicknames. I originally had this name on our list with my daughter but hubs was not on board at all. This time around he’s warmed up to it quite a bit which is exciting. [name]Ive[/name] considered other names similar that end with s ([name]Magnus[/name], [name]Atlas[/name], [name]Gaius[/name], and even [name]Atticus[/name] too) but then I think why not go with [name]Mathias[/name] which has the same feel and have all that history with it. It’s really grown on me during this pregnancy
