Just how popular is Hazel going to get?

Yes, it’s me again with my [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] hangups

This name is really the frontrunner for me. I’ve loved it for a long time, love that witch hazel blooms in [name_u]Winter[/name_u], love the sound, it goes with our other children’s names, etc.

I posted before about my concern about it being too much of a “hipster” name, but what I realized in the end was that my concern lied more with popularity than anything (we live in the midst of a lot of hipsters, though, so chances are that if something is indeed a hipster name we’ll hear it a lot on the playground and in our kids’ classes.) #175 is already further up the list than I would normally consider, and I keep seeing posts about how it’s about to skyrocket due to TFIOS.

What do you think?

Honestly I think it is going to get alot more popular. It fits into the “old lady” name trend that is picking up. Older names making a comeback. It also falls into the nature sounding names that are on trend right now. Paired with the fact the TFIOS movie is going to come out next year, I think it’s going to get popular. Top 20? Maybe not but I see it atleast breaking top 100 over the next couple of years if not top 50 even. It’s #175 right now in the US and has been rising every year for the last 11 years.

Its going to be VERY popular for sure but if you love it i think you dont need to worry about popularity

I can’t see hazel being “popular”. I think it will be a recognizable name where as before if you heard it you would do a double take. I’ve never met a [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] before and I live a in a pretty dense hipster area.

I don’t think that [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] will ever get in the top 100. I have only met one [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and she’s about 10. I really hope that it doesn’t get too popular because I love it myself! Also, keep in mind that a “popular” is not actually as popular as you think it is. When you think of a popular name, you may think of [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the top 10 names are no where near as popular as that. So even if you went with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], chances are there may be another [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] at the school, but most likely not in the same grade. I wouldn’t call that “popular.”

I don’t think it is going to zoom all the way up to the top 30 or 20. But I think it might break the top 100. Especially with so many people loving The Fault In Our Stars and that it is becoming a movie. But even if it breaks the top 100, I wouldn’t really worry about it, because names in the top 100 really aren’t that popular, there aren’t that many babies being born with the name. According to SSA, only 1,768 girls were named [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] last year. That seems like a lot, but in comparison to how many babies are born a year, it isn’t that much. [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] was ranked 100 last year, and only 3,025 were born (with that spelling). Not that many if you compare it to how many babies are born per year.
I don’t think it will be the next [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], that is for sure. It does fit in with the trend of the old lady names, like [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f], so it is going to rise. But I don’t think it will be too popular, I don’t think it fits with the overly girly trend that we have going.
If you really love it, you should use it. If you are really concerned about popularity, check your state/area charts and see if it even makes the list. I checked my local chart, and it didn’t make the top one hundred (meaning there were less than 80 born in my state). I wouldn’t worry too much about it. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is lovely. You should go for it.

[name_m]How[/name_m] do I look up specific information for my state/area? I have never met a [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]…

You can check the top 100 for your state here.

I’m thinking it’ll get pretty popular! It’s been on my name list for years and as soon as I heard TFIOS was going to be made into a movie I was like, “oh crap. there goes my number 1 name”

But, like most names that are popular, I don’t see a whole lot out of the top ten in my area. I haven’t met a little [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] yet, and since I won’t be trying to conceive for at least 5 more years, hopefully it’ll mull over and drop in popularity by then

I saw that, but since it’s not in the top 100 it doesn’t help me unfortunately! I know I’ve seen the state pdfs before, but I can’t remember where I found them now.

I can’t remember either but I just happen to have a zip file of every state. What state are you from? I can PM you a download.

Well, in WA state (where I live) it’s been in the top 100 for a couple years now. It’s definitely getting much more popular, although I would be a little surprised if it got into the top 20 or anything like that (maybe in [name_m]Portland[/name_m]…). Anyway, I definitely agree it’s kind of a hipster name, but it’s still a great name.

I am having the same problem with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]! It is so beautiful, adorable, classic and spunky! Best of all it’s short and sweet. While pregnant with DH it was the front runner on my girl list. Everyone I knew asked where I came up with such an old rare name. Now we have one other [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] in our town ([name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u] adorable) and now I’m iffy. I agree it’s not the next [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] or [name_f]Ella[/name_f] but I wonder if it may become trendy.
I agree to check your state because sometimes I think names are very trendy from reading them on nb all the time but in reality there is very few ppl if anyone using the names I love in my area.

Awesome! PMing you!
