Just starting our search

Hello, Berries! My husband and I learned just last week that we are expecting. It’s still very early, but why not start the fun of the name hunt now?

My husband and I have been together for a very long time and have played “name our future babies” numerous times before, but we do tend to have divergent tastes. He tends toward occupation names and names that are conducive to nicknames that feel fresh and energetic. His favorites are [name]Cooper[/name], [name]Walker[/name], and [name]West[/name]/[name]Weston[/name] for a boy, and [name]Penelope[/name], nn [name]Penny[/name] for a girl or otherwise any name that will get him to the nickname [name]Ellie[/name]. What’s interesting is that though I don’t particularly like any of these names, I do understand and appreciate why he finds them attractive – they sound like sunny, cheerful, easy-going, good-natured names and nicknames.

I tend toward names that read perhaps a bit older, although I admit they may be hard to wear in real life and also not liked by other people. For boys I like [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Jonah[/name]. For girls I like [name]Ingrid[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name].

We have such polar naming personalities; I’m the mellow cello to his bright violin :D. If you have any suggestions for us we would really appreciate fresh perspectives. We are wide open, so feel free to have fun with this. Thank you, Berries!

[name]Ingrid[/name] is my fave…but I’m a bit biased.
Anyway, [name]How[/name] about [name]Wesley[/name] for a compromise?

[name]Silas[/name] and [name]Jonah[/name] are bounding on up the chart, so I’m not sure how truly they’re hard to wear and disliked by people : D. To me they actually both have a clear western vibe so they could fit in with the cowboy names, although the cowboy names are much more surname-y.

[name]Wyatt[/name] came to mind for you guys immediately. [name]Noah[/name] too. Then [name]Nolan[/name]. Then [name]Wesley[/name].

[name]Ingrid[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name]…rarer, but I don’t think of them old and hard to wear. [name]Ophelia[/name] maybe a little bit because it’s tragic, but I do think it’s very beautiful. I’ve always preferred [name]Odelia[/name]. [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name] have a similar feel to me, you guys maybe could find common ground. [name]How[/name] do you both feel about [name]Persephone[/name]?

I went to nymbler and tried [name]Silas[/name], [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Cooper[/name], [name]Walker[/name], [name]West[/name], and [name]Weston[/name] for boys. Some of the better suggestions and why I think they’re better are:

[name]Asher[/name] - Biblical name that works on a cowboy, sounds surnameish.
[name]Benjamin[/name] - Biblical name that sounds cowboyish with the nn [name]Ben[/name]. Plus if he he likes [name]Penny[/name], maybe he likes [name]Benny[/name].
[name]Colton[/name] - surname-y name with the O from [name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Jude[/name] - Bible-based name that works on a cowboy. Which made me immediately think of [name]Luke[/name].
[name]Levi[/name] - a cowboy name because of the jeans, but also an “old-mannish” Bible name. Because of this, maybe you’d both like [name]Eli[/name]? [name]Elias[/name]? Although that might rule out some [name]Ellie[/name] names for him.
[name]Owen[/name] - takes the O from [name]Jonah[/name] but puts it in a surname-y name.
[name]Wylie[/name] - cowboy name that has some sounds from [name]Silas[/name]

Any of those sticking? There are more but that’s a starting point.

For girls I typed in [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], and [name]Ingrid[/name]. Suggestions I liked and why included:

[name]Adela[/name] - rare vowel name that has “el” in it.
[name]Antonia[/name] - unpopular like your taste, feels Western because of My [name]Antonia[/name], vowel name and elaborate like [name]Penelope[/name].
[name]Celia[/name] - similar feel to [name]Ophelia[/name], but the nn [name]Celie[/name] is very cowgirl to me.
[name]Hazel[/name] - to me has a similar vibe to [name]Ingrid[/name], has ‘el’ in it and feels like a cowgirl.
[name]Iris[/name] - a vowel name like 3 of them, and it’s old-lady-turned chic like [name]Penelope[/name].

I realize btw that the cowboy thing wasn’t clearly stated for girls (i.e. it’s not clear he likes cowgirl/western girls names. But [name]Penny[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name] fit that mold to me).

Also working across genders [name]Ingrid[/name] makes me think of [name]Ingram[/name], which is a surname that feels cowboyish to me. The nn [name]Ingo[/name] is wonderful [name]IMO[/name]. [name]Ingram[/name] makes me think of [name]Bingham[/name]. [name]Bing[/name] is old man because of [name]Bing[/name] [name]Crosby[/name], and yet zippy and young.

[name]Ingrid[/name] and cowgirl/Western makes me [name]Indigo[/name] and [name]India[/name].

Good luck!

If he loves the nn [name]Ellie[/name] for a girl, you’ve got lots of more “serious” options at your disposal:
[name]Eliana[/name] nn options; [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Lili[/name], [name]Ana[/name] (this is #1 on my list right now for girls, my mom’s name is [name]Eleanor[/name], goes by [name]Ellie[/name], and when I told her about this name, she was worried about the confusion 2 Ellies would cause in the family)
[name]Eleanor[/name] nn options; [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Lenore[/name], [name]Nora[/name], [name]Nellie[/name] etc.
[name]Elizabeth[/name] nn options; [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Liz[/name], [name]Lizbeth[/name], [name]Beth[/name], [name]Betty[/name], [name]Betsy[/name], [name]Elsa[/name], [name]Elsie[/name], etc.
[name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Elodie[/name]
[name]Elaine[/name]
These names are classic and traditional but have lots of sunny, bright nicknames associated with them.

For boys… I always find boys names a lot harder. I’ll have to think about that one some more.

etc.

starcatcher668 - I think [name]Ingrid[/name] is great. If it is your given name, then hats of to the people who named you.

jesba - I’m glad [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Jonah[/name] aren’t seen as too out there. I didn’t see the cowboy/western thread between our names before, so thank you for pointing it out. The Mr. and I have a common ground after all  I texted [name]Wyatt[/name] to my husband and he is fully on board.
I think you have our tastes pegged since we did bat [name]Cecelia[/name]/[name]Celia[/name] around although it hasn’t stuck yet, and DH did mention [name]Bingham[/name]! [name]Ingo[/name] is quite a bouncy little nickname. I think I’ll put [name]Iris[/name] on the “to discuss” list.

lilysong - Thank you for pointing out [name]Lenore[/name] (what if it’s spelled [name]Leonore[/name]?). I couldn’t think of much aside from [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name] as a gateway to [name]Ellie[/name], so thank you for the ideas!

Thank you for your help with our budding lists. Thus far, in no particular order, we have:

Boys - [name]Wyatt[/name], [name]Cooper[/name], [name]Silas[/name], [name]Jonah[/name]

Girls - [name]Ingrid[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Iris[/name], revisit [name]Cecelia[/name]/[name]Celia[/name]

Thanks again. This is a great starting point.

Ooh, I think you might both love [name]Eliora[/name]!

Some other ideas:
[name]Elsa[/name]
[name]Marta[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
Avonlea

For boys:
[name]Gideon[/name]
[name]Charlton[/name]

[name]Ingrid[/name] is amazing! If we’re ever lucky enough to have a second daughter, her name will definitely be [name]Ingrid[/name]! I also love [name]Silas[/name]. The only one on your list that might be “hard to wear” is [name]Ophelia[/name].

As far as boy’s names go, I would suggest maybe finding an older name with a easy-going nickname?

Such as:
[name]Leonard[/name]/[name]Leonardo[/name] - nn [name]Leo[/name]
[name]Abraham[/name] - nn [name]Abe[/name] or [name]Bram[/name]

By the way, I love [name]Jonah[/name]! Kind of goes with the western thing your husband has going!

For girls, maybe some feminine antique type names? Like:

[name]Celia[/name] - Alot like [name]Ophelia[/name], but in my opinion a little more modern and easy to wear. Plus it’s really cute!
[name]Felicity[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the nn Lissy, but [name]Ellie[/name] would work too

Or, I was also thinking, [name]Shakespeare[/name] girl’s names? Since you like [name]Ophelia[/name]. Personally I find [name]Ophelia[/name] a bit too old sounding, not to mention the character met a tragic ending. I thought of the name [name]Miranda[/name], which is from [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s The [name]Tempest[/name].

But those are just some suggestions, hopefully that helps!
