Kanga and Roux

Soccer players [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] Leroux and [name_m]Dom[/name_m] Dwyer welcomed a baby girl named [name_u]Roux[/name_u] this morning (little sister to [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] [name_u]Cruz[/name_u] for all who, like me, love sibsets). Her name is, as you can probably tell, after her mom and I actually kinda love it? Is that crazy?

I often do this, where I fall in love with new names quickly.

I’m always on the lookout for any new soccer-related names, especially USWNT names, because they would honor my dad and my best friend (as well as a sport I love). Could Roux make that list?

I’m planning to post part 3 of my “Names I can picture myself using on a daughter” series soon, which is (spoiler alert) The Strong and Spunky. I could see [name_u]Roux[/name_u] working on that list.

My first middle name thought was [name_u]Roux[/name_u] [name_f]Eliora[/name_f]. Wdyt? Is [name_u]Roux[/name_u] crazy or spunky?

Thanks!

I like [name_u]Roux[/name_u], however, I prefer the spelling [name_u]Rue[/name_u]. I’m sure there would be pronunciation mistakes from others as well…

I also like the idea of [name_u]Roux[/name_u]/[name_u]Rue[/name_u] as a nn.
Full name suggestions:
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Trula[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]/ [name_f]Margaruite[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosaleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_f]Roxanne[/name_f]
[name_u]Drew[/name_u]
[name_u]Truly[/name_u]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Deborah[/name_f]

I really like [name_u]Roux[/name_u]! It has a familiar yet distinct sound and [name_u]Roux[/name_u] [name_f]Eliora[/name_f] is gorgeous

I’m not sure about [name_u]Roux[/name_u]… Agree it sounds nice, but would you really name a child “redhead”? I know that this may not seem relevant if you don’t know many people who speak [name_m]French[/name_m], but still. I also know there are other names that mean redhead or something similar, but to actually use the exact [name_m]French[/name_m] word for it? [name_u]Roux[/name_u] is also a cooking term. Personally I wouldn’t do it.

I really like the sound of [name_u]Roux[/name_u], and I know a little girl with the name (sister to Jaxx, another sibset for you!)

I too prefer the spelling [name_u]Rue[/name_u], though, because I speak [name_m]French[/name_m] and roux being the masculine form of the adjective “red-haired” bugs me — I feel like it should be Rousse, even though that’s not nearly as nice! I also like the connection to the herb rue.

Thanks for the replies so far!

@river_dweller and @katinka, I like [name_u]Rue[/name_u] but it’s way too connected to The Hunger Games for me, and that’s not my favorite franchise (although I think [name_u]Rue[/name_u] was probably my favorite character).

I also have [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] on my girls list but I don’t think either would lend itself well to the nickname [name_u]Roux[/name_u] (with that spelling… perhaps Roo) and I don’t see myself as much of a nicknamer, although that may change.

@rosebeth, I know about the [name_m]French[/name_m] meaning (and @katinka, [name_u]Roux[/name_u] being the masculine form is a factor for me as well but Rousse is not nearly as appealing). I don’t think it would be a problem in the US but it’s certainly something to consider. For me though, it’s not much different from naming a kid [name_f]Goldie[/name_f].

I’m not a fan of the [name_u]Roux[/name_u] or [name_u]Rue[/name_u] spellings, but my son is called [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and we often call him Ru (Although in my mind I’m spelling it Roo!) I’ve never written it down though lol

[name_u]Roux[/name_u] is super cute and has a really pretty sound, but I can’t quite get quite over the fact that it’s a cooking ingredient.

I love the nickname Roo though - probably too cutesy as a full name, but it would make a great nickname for something like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], or any name really! It sounds like the kind of pet name that doesn’t have to be connected to the actual name. One of my favourite book series has a little boy called Roo, whose full name is [name_m]William[/name_m].
