Karis/carys

[name_f]Karis[/name_f] or carys? Which spelling do you like? I believe the first is the Greek form and the second is the welsh. What do you think of the name in general. Thanks ladies

I love the sound, but the only spelling I would use is [name_f]Cerys[/name_f]. I also love [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f], which is another form of [name_f]Cerys[/name_f].

I’ve never heard the Greek origins before - interesting.

My 7yo cousin’s name is [name_f]Cerys[/name_f] (she gets [name_f]Kiki[/name_f] or [name_m]Cees[/name_m]), so this is the only spelling that looks right to me - plus you’d get a lot of ‘‘CAR-is?’’ with the ‘‘a’’ spelling… my cousin already has a lot of trouble outside of the UK (she’s Canadian with British parents, I was at the playground with her the other day and this woman heard me saying her name and butted in with ‘‘HER NAME IS CARROTS?’’ I was like… uh, what?)

[name_f]Karis[/name_f] could grow on me though. It’s pretty - I think I’d go with that honestly.

Oh dear, it makes one wonder!

[name_f]Carys[/name_f] (Car iss) is easy to say, and a lovely girls Welsh name I know of [name_f]Karis[/name_f] but it seems like a different name, different gender to me.

[name_f]Cerys[/name_f] and [name_f]Carys[/name_f] are different names with different pronunciations.

[name_f]Cerys[/name_f] = KEH-riss
[name_f]Carys[/name_f] = KAH-riss

I wasn’t sure on that - I’ve seen them interchanged before, and they share a meaning, so I was misinformed and thought they were the same haha

Thank you for all your replies. I can’t dig cerys the e really bothers me lol and it does seem like it would be said differently. We couldn’t call her kiki for a nickname because we call our kierra kiki

I’ve seen them used interchangeably before too, very similar sounds though I guess.

I love the name, but very much prefer [name_f]Carys[/name_f]. It somehow looks more classic and feminine to me.

I think many people in the states would pronounce [name_f]Carys[/name_f] as “CARE-iss” rhymes with [name_u]Paris[/name_u] or “CAR-iss” in the states. I think traditional welsh pronunciation is actually more like Kah-riss, like the beginning of [name_f]Carissa[/name_f] (with a softer a, more like as in “cat”).

I prefer [name_f]Carys[/name_f] spelling as apposed to [name_f]Karis[/name_f]. I think either way there will be some pronunciation issues and actually whichever pronunciation you prefer will be just fine as it’s one of those names that is pronounced very differently and seems to be debated outside it’s country of origin. That said, it’s a simple enough correction and I think people will catch on after being corrected.

P.S. love this name.

Oops I was actually pronouncing it care is. I prefer carys. My husband prefers karis…but the spelling doesn’t matter as much as the name…so says him. Lol so if I do you it will probably be carys. I think it looks better.
