Katherine, oh why do you taunt me so?

OH’s favourite girl name is [name]Katherine[/name], and while it’s not top of my list, I do like it. I know I’d be likely to use a nickname with it though, and herein lies my issue.

Problem is, he doesn’t like the NNs [name]Kathy[/name] or Kath as he thinks they’re really old-ladyish, and I’m inclined to agree with him on that.

I like [name]Kate[/name], but I’m not so keen on [name]Katy[/name]/[name]Katie[/name] as I knew so many growing up, and I think she’d get [name]Katy[/name]/[name]Katie[/name] more as a child before she gets [name]Kate[/name].

There’s [name]Kat[/name], which I don’t mind, but does it sound odd next to a one syllable surname that begins in the same hard K sound?

And just how long will it be before [name]Kitty[/name] stops being cute and starts sounding silly as a nickname?

Also, with a surname that begins with C, do you think [name]Catherine[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name] would be the better spelling? And what about with potential brother [name]Charlie[/name]?

[name]Kate[/name]/[name]Katie[/name] is my nickname (although I’m a [name]Kaitlin[/name]), so I have some experience with this

I definitely got [name]Katie[/name] more as a child, but that was my mom’s intention. She introduced me as [name]Katie[/name], or by my full name, and that’s what people called me. I think [name]Katie[/name] is sweet, and it’s SO much less common than when you (or I) were growing up. Now all the little girls in her class will be [name]Bella[/name] or [name]Sophie[/name], and she’ll be the only [name]Katie[/name]. But if you really want to avoid it, I think introducing her as [name]Katherine[/name] or [name]Kate[/name] should be enough.

I don’t think a one syllable nickname and last name is an issue. [name]How[/name] often will she be called [name]Kat[/name] C____? In roll call they would probably use her full name. (FWIW, I have a half-sister named [name]Cathryn[/name] who goes by [name]Cat[/name], and her surname is one syllable, and it sounds fine – ETA I also know a C@t [name]Quinn[/name], spelled this way, and I think it’s awesome. Sounds like a superhero’s name.)

Of course, you also have to take into account that your daughter will probably choose her own preferred nickname at some point which might not be your favorite  I think it happens to everyone.

And with a surname that begins with C and a potential brother whose name begins with C, I’d pick the K spelling. As much as I love alliteration, I think two kids with C names gets you stuck in a pattern.

I prefer the [name]Katherine[/name] spelling. Have you considered the nickname [name]Katya[/name]?

Ooh, I never thought of [name]Katya[/name], it’s rather pretty.

And greyer, I’m glad you think [name]Katie[/name] isn’t as popular now as it used to be, as it is a nice nickname, but it just felt so popular growing up. Popularity doesn’t bother me, but I just see [name]Katie[/name] as a bit dated to the 90s because of how many I knew that were born then. Although the vast majority were [name]Katy[/name]/[name]Katie[/name] on BC rather than as a nickname anyway, so [name]Katherine[/name] nn [name]Katie[/name] isn’t quite the same.

I love [name]Catherine[/name]! I really prefer the C spelling, but I don’t mind K either. I don’t think [name]Catherine[/name] needs a nickname. However, [name]Kate[/name] would be my pick.

My oldest daughter is a [name]Kathryn[/name]. Most often she goes by her full name, but I call her [name]Kat[/name] a lot. At dance though her buddies have taken to calling her [name]Wren[/name] because of the -ryn sound at the end of her name.

I think it’s a fun and up to date nickname for [name]Kathryn[/name] (no matter how you spell it).

I’m a [name]Kathryn[/name] nn [name]Kat[/name]. There are tons of nicknames for [name]Kathryn[/name]: [name]Kitty[/name], [name]Kate[/name], [name]Katie[/name]/[name]Katy[/name], [name]Kit[/name]. I’m often known as Ryn too by my little cousins. [name]Kitty[/name] never gets too old as my grandmother still calls me that on occassion. If you do name your daughter [name]Katherine[/name]/[name]Catherine[/name]/[name]Kathryn[/name] etc she will probably pick her own nickname anyway. My mum wanted a [name]Katie[/name]… she got a [name]Kat[/name]/Ryn.

My favorite nn for [name]Katherine[/name] (I do prefer [name]Catherine[/name]) is Renna / [name]Rinna[/name]. I love it.

My favorite nn for [name]Katherine[/name] (I prefer [name]Catherine[/name], but don’t mind [name]Katherine[/name]) is Renna / [name]Rinna[/name].

[name]Catherine[/name] and [name]Charlie[/name] would be so cute, but only if you weren’t going to have any more. I like [name]Kate[/name] and [name]Katie[/name] best but I think [name]Kat[/name] C___ would be fine as well.

I prefer the [name]Catherine[/name] spelling, but then I’m biased 'cause it’s my mn. You could always go for [name]Kitty[/name] (my favourite [name]Catherine[/name] nn) when she is little then move on to [name]Kate[/name] when she is older to try and prevent the [name]Katie[/name] which you think is more likely to occur when she’s little.

[name]Kitty[/name] then moving onto [name]Kate[/name] is actually a good idea, they’re pretty similar. I know she’d have her own opinion on what she’d want to be called, but I can at least try and push for my favourite, right? :stuck_out_tongue:
