I’m a teenberry and [name]Katrina[/name] is what my parents named me. As a child, I loved my name, but after the hurricane, I started to dislike it intensely, to the point where I was absolutely determined to change it. I told myself that it was “too harsh”, “too connected to the hurricane/embarrassing”, “too rare/I never meet anyone else named this”, “I hate being called [name]Kat[/name], it’s weird”. I’ve come close to choosing a new name several times. Recently, though, I’ve started to like it again - the hurricane teasing has started to wear away, and I’m realizing that after closer to two decades of hearing it applied to me, I might not be able to transition into a new name as easily anymore. [name]Even[/name] though I’m not so fond of [name]Kat[/name] because every [name]Kat[/name] I’ve met has been terrible, I think I want to stay [name]Katrina[/name].
Right now, I think my biggest issue with it is that because of the years of dislike I’ve put into it, I’ve kind of ruined it a little for myself. It’s hard to think of it as pretty or mine after so long a time of vehemently denying it. So, my question for you, berries, is this: can you help me find a new nickname and love [name]Katrina[/name] again?
I understand where you are coming from - I, too, hated my name in my early teen years and even talked about changing it - but in the end, I AM [name]Cassandra[/name]. No matter what else surrounds the name, no matter if I go through periods of dislike, it’s still who I am. Anything else would feel impersonal and awkward for people to call me.
As a nickname, maybe you could try [name]Trina[/name], [name]Nina[/name], Kateri (a variation of [name]Katherine[/name], same as [name]Katrina[/name]), [name]Rina[/name], [name]Tina[/name], maybe [name]Kai[/name]?
I think [name]Kat[/name] is lovely (and I [name]LOVE[/name] Kateri, which [name]Flick[/name] mentioned above) but I think [name]Kitty[/name] is possibly the sweetest nickname ever.
Aw, lovely. <3 Katrina is a lovely name, I’ve always liked it. I knew the most awesome woman named Katrina. She was Ukrainian, had a fantastic home, a lovely, outgoing, funny personality, and once put pink highlights in her blonde hair, regardless of the fact she was seemingly “Well over the age” to do so. She was gorgeous to boot.
When Hurricane Katrina hit, I remember thinking “Ahhh. That’s such a beautiful name… and now it’s ruined because of a stupid hurricane. -_- pout”
And then I got over it, Katrina isn’t defined by a hurricane, just like Charley isn’t either.
I’ve toyed at one point with Katerina vs. Katrina, and have considered Katrina for my own name change. Yes ma’am I have. I think it’s a wonderful name, and would much rather have been named Katrina than my birthname.
My personal favourite nickname is Katya, other ideas are Kate, Katie, Teri/Terri, Trina, Nina, Annie perhaps, Kari, Tria.
I like [name]Katrina[/name]. [name]How[/name] about [name]Trina[/name], [name]Rina[/name], [name]Tina[/name], [name]Kitty[/name], or [name]Nani[/name]?
My best friend is named [name]Katrina[/name], and has always gone by [name]Trina[/name]. [name]Trina[/name]'s nn is perfect for her personality: sweet and silly with a dash of brash. [name]Kat[/name] has a harder, more abrupt feel to me for some reason, I can understand not wanting to go by it if that just doesn’t feel like you.
[name]Katrina[/name] is beautiful, my favorite nns are [name]Trina[/name], [name]Kate[/name] and [name]Katya[/name].
Good luck!
[name]Katrina[/name] is beautiful! I’m glad to hear that you’re moving past the hurricane stuff - it doesn’t ruin your name at all. You could use [name]Kay[/name]/[name]Kae[/name]/[name]Kaye[/name] as a nickname.
Back in 1992 (!) I remember teasing a little boy in day care by calling him “Hurricane [name]Andrew[/name].” I blame it on being in elementary school, but I am sure that was irritating for him as it was for you.
[name]Katrina[/name] is a beautiful name. I think time passing will help. You’ve been saturated by your name for a while, been overexposed, which is something not many of us experience. I think your love for your name will grow again naturally.
For nicknames, I like the suggestion of [name]Nina[/name]. I’ve known two Kristinas who went by [name]Nina[/name] and I think it works for [name]Katrina[/name] too.
Aww, I had the very same experience. [name]Just[/name] about the time when I started looking into names to start the process (since I was in elementary school I’d promised I’d change my name!), I realized I loved [name]Ashley[/name]. Ugh. It’s sort of anticlimactic, but much less of a hassle.
I have to admit, though–after looking at names that might suit me, some days I still feel much more like an [name]Annabel[/name] or [name]Lillian[/name] than an [name]Ashley[/name], but I still wouldn’t go through the hassle of changing my name when I’m such an [name]Ashley[/name], and I still love my name so much.
If I were a [name]Katrina[/name], and if it fit me, I would absolutely go by [name]Kit[/name]/[name]Kitty[/name]–I love it as a nn for [name]Catherine[/name], and I think it’s just as lovely for [name]Katrina[/name]. Very striking and spunky, yet very sweet. I know a [name]Katrina[/name] who goes by [name]Trina[/name] as well; I’ve always thought that was nice. If you want something a bit more out-there, I think something like [name]Nina[/name], [name]Kiki[/name], [name]Kate[/name] (okay, not-so-out-there, but it hasn’t been mentioned much yet!), [name]Wren[/name]/[name]Rin[/name], [name]Atti[/name]/[name]Attie[/name]/[name]Atty[/name] (sort of sounds like [name]Addy[/name], which is quite in right now for little kids–I’ve heard [name]Atti[/name] more as a nn for [name]Atticus[/name], but I know several Autumns who go by Auttie, so I think [name]Attie[/name] could work for a [name]Katrina[/name]), etc.
Aw, I’m happy for you! [name]Katrina[/name] is a lovely name and I’m glad for you to feel good about your name. -fyi, a strong association for me is the beautiful [name]Katrina[/name] from Sleepy Hollow :). I’m crazy about the costumes in [name]Tim[/name] [name]Burton[/name]'s version of the story.
Anyways, you definitely have a lot of great options for nicknames. I particularly like the suggestions of [name]Nina[/name], [name]Kay[/name], [name]Katya[/name], and [name]Kit[/name]/[name]Kitty[/name].
