Katy - sweet and vintage, or too associated with the pop star?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
I used to just love [name_f]Kate[/name_f] alone with no nickname, but lately [name_f]Katy[/name_f] has been growing on me. I know that [name_f]Katie[/name_f] is the more modern spelling, but traditionally, the [name_f]Katy[/name_f] spelling was used more in previous times (think the book What [name_f]Katy[/name_f] Did and the wartime song Katy)
I actually now prefer this spelling over [name_f]Katie[/name_f] but is it too associated with the pop star [name_f]Katy[/name_f] [name_u]Perry[/name_u]?
Please let me know. Thanks.

I don’t think it’s too [name_f]Katy[/name_f] [name_u]Perry[/name_u] at all! I think of the [name_u]Texas[/name_u] city before [name_f]Katy[/name_f] [name_u]Perry[/name_u], actually, or katydids the insect (neither of which are bad associations, to clarify!). I think it’s sweet and fun and vintage.

That spelling does make me think of [name_f]Katy[/name_f] [name_u]Perry[/name_u] but I wouldn’t necessarily think you named your baby after her.

It’s a pretty name! The Katie’s (Catie/Kayti, etc) I know are all such sweet people!

[name_f]My[/name_f] first association is definitely What [name_f]Katy[/name_f] Did. I had to think for a while to work out the pop star you were referencing, but then I wasn’t really into pop music when she was popular.

I do associate it with Katy Perry a little bit, but it definitely isn’t an issue, there are lots of people named Katy, and it was an established name way before she rose to fame. I think that spelling is completely usable, but if you really don’t want any association AT ALL, I would still go with Katie.

[name_f]Katy[/name_f] is a fine spelling! I know a few people IRL with this spelling, and they wear is just great. Not too pop star. Makes me think of wee katydids before any books and all!

I’ve met a few Katys so it doesn’t feel like a one person name for me

I prefer [name_f]Katy[/name_f] to [name_f]Katie[/name_f] too. I don’t like [name_f]Katie[/name_f]

There is also Katty, and [name_f]Cathy[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Cathy[/name_f] and [name_f]Katy[/name_f] the most.

It’s a fairly common name so I don’t think anyone is going to assume that [name_f]Katy[/name_f] [name_u]Perry[/name_u] was the namesake or inspiration. Especially as she isn’t as popular now as she used to be.

it doesn’t make me think [name_f]Katy[/name_f] [name_u]Perry[/name_u] immediately but it’s definitely not vintage imo

If you look at historical usage as well as appearances in older books / media you’ll find it is. One of those names like [name_f]Stella[/name_f] or [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] that feels modern but has the historical usage to back it up.

having historical usage and being vintage are not the same thing though. I feel similarly about Jessie—its popularity in the 80s and 90s has solidified it as a name of that period as much as something like [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] or [name_u]Courtney[/name_u]. it’s certainly not vintage in the same way [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] or [name_f]Iris[/name_f] are. furthermore, statistics on [name_f]Katy[/name_f] are probably misleading given that it’s also a common nickname for popular names like [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f], [name_f]Katrina[/name_f], etc.
