[name_u]Baby[/name_u] girl #2 is due in a week, and we don’t have a name we are in love with. I have top three choices:
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Lu[/name_f] see A)
[name_f]Ines[/name_f]
[name_f]Junia[/name_f]
Possible middle names (marie–auntie’s name OR [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] OR [name_f]Bea[/name_f]—my last name starts with B)
her last name will be one syllable, and she will join sister [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_m]George[/name_m] and parents with really plain names. [name_f]My[/name_f] original rule was to come up with a fresh sounding name but something simple. But now two of the names will require an explanation of pronunciation every time. And [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] will likely become [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_u]Lou[/name_u]. We already have a lucy in one of our circles.
[name_f]My[/name_f] questions…how much of a pain for parents and/or child to explain the pronunciation of a name every time?
And how much of a pain is it to have an official name, but go by nickname most of the time?
I think whatever name you pick you actually won’t have to explain it every time. If you introduce her verbally, and as she gets older and introduces herself verbally, people will hear it and be able to repeat it. The only pronunciation clarification will be when people read the name like at a Dr’s office or at school, IF you/she haven’t prepped them - and then even some of the time it will be right. People are going to guess that prn of [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] at least some of the time.
I don’t think it’s annoying at all to have a proper name and go by a nickname. I’m a [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] and go by [name_u]Jess[/name_u], I prefer it. I like the flexibility. Also, basically no one has really ever assumed to call me by a nickname without my / my parents’ permission. I mean it happens here or there, but it’s hardly a common thing. I know two [name_m]Lucias[/name_m] who go by the full name, it’s not a problem.
You have great options in every case - best wishes!
I like all 3 names. [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] is my favorite with [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. I don’t think these are difficult names to pronounce, although [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] does have several pronunciations. I think most ppl in the US would instinctively say loo-SEE-ah, but at least it won’t be butchered if they say it one of 2 other accepted ways! [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] gets my vote
I like [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], but if there’s already a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] you see often, I’d go with [name_f]Junia[/name_f]. I know you’re going for simple, but I’m a huge fan of giving a child a full name that lends itself to nicknames. I think [name_f]Junia[/name_f] is great for that, with [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_f]Junie[/name_f], and [name_f]Juno[/name_f] as possible NNs. So adorable, and it is simple, while still giving her options as she grows.
[name_f]My[/name_f] sister’s name is [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], pronounced [name_f]Lu[/name_f]-chee-uh, She always gets [name_f]Lu[/name_f]-see-a and [name_f]Lu[/name_f]-sha and had to correct people repeatedly at times. It’s frustrating for her, so she now answers to any pronounciation, and says “Call me [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].”
I prefer [name_f]Junia[/name_f] out of your choices.
I like [name_f]Ines[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] the best! To me it’s a good complement to the straightforward [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_m]George[/name_m].
I like the idea of using just [name_f]Bea[/name_f] as the middle name, to go with [name_m]George[/name_m]. I think it works better with [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] than [name_f]Ines[/name_f]:
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Bea[/name_f] B_.
