Kennedy for girl name?

I made a thread recently to see which names everyone liked better. When I told my boyfriend he said that he liked the name [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]. What first came to mind was the president who got shot. After doing research on the name the meaning wasn’t very pleasant and it doesn’t sound feminine. What do you think about the name?

[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] is mine and S/O’s current #1 for a future daughter - we have [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] chosen  The meaning doesn’t really bother me (I mean, it’s still a top 100 name in the US, and look at [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] - “crooked nose” - it’s been popular for over two decades now and it’s still kicking, so a bad meaning isn’t necessarily THAT bad).

I first found the name when I was a little girl (about 9?) in a magazine, but I was also very into history (always have been) and idolized [name_u]Jackie[/name_u] [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] at the time. I still adore the name, mostly in part to her. Her elegance and class resonates and that’s what comes to mind when I think of the name [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] - a stylish, graceful, elegant, compassionate woman who is admired and looked up to by many.

That’s just my take on it though.

[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] is not my style. It’s not bad name, it doesn’t have a bad sound. It’s just too trendy for me.

You don’t like the sound, you don’t think it sounds feminine, you don’t like the meaning and it reminds you of [name_m]John[/name_m] F. [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]. I don’t think you like it as much as your boyfriend does, and you should choose something you both love.

[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] is sooo pretentious. More so than most surname first names for girls in my opinion. Something about it just reeks wannabe. Yeah, the meaning is not great and I agree it doesn’t sound feminine. [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] was a cool President, and [name_u]Jackie[/name_u] O was a lovely First Lady, but if I were honoring them I would definitely go with [name_m]John[/name_m] or [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f], but it doesn’t sound like honoring them is your intention.

[name_u]Cassidy[/name_u]
[name_f]Melody[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_u]Kendall[/name_u]

It’s not my style, but there’s nothing wrong with it.

I’ve never been a huge fan of [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]. I just don’t like how it sounds. I agree that it sounds pretentious, and I did know a little girl with this name who was incredibly snobby, so that probably doesn’t help, haha.

That being said, it’s not awful, but it’s not my style at all.

JFK and [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] are my first associations as well, but I think that’s a good thing; they are both really cool namesakes! I don’t think of [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] as a pretentious name at all; it actually seems pretty commonplace to me.

If he just likes it for the sound though, the alternative that always comes to mind is [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u]. It’s still unisex, but leans a bit further feminine, and the meaning (as given by nameberry) is at least a little more positive. And if it’s the [name_m]Ken[/name_m] sound he likes, there is always [name_f]Kendra[/name_f].

I have great associations with [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], so I like the name. It’s not something I would consider but I think it sounds very modern and sleek. I don’t find it to be super pretentious, at least not as much as [name_m]Kensington[/name_m] would. I like other posters’ suggestions of [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] (I actually really like the [name_u]Kassidy[/name_u] spelling too) but it sounds like [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] is what you love, so that’s my suggestion and what I like best.

Thank you guys for giving me your personal views, it has made me consider some things.
