Kr8tiv 1st Grade Class

I was looking at a first grader’s yearbook whose in my class at the daycare. I feel really kind of sad for all those kids. Her class, I kid you not, is full of Kr8tiv spellings and weird names. There are a few nice ones and some normal Michaels and [name]James[/name], but the majority are awful [name]IMO[/name]. I’ll put the pronunciations that Haley told me the kids use.

Here’s the people in her class (excluding the Michaels and those kind)

[name]Braxton[/name] (b)
Elezabeth
[name]Kodie[/name] (b) – I assumed this was a girl till I saw the pic
[name]Gavyn[/name]
[name]Nevaeh[/name]
[name]Heaven[/name] – yea both in one class
[name]Avary[/name] (g)
Madis (g) – there were 2
[name]Jayson[/name] (b)
Jayeson (b)
[name]Baylee[/name]
[name]Brason[/name]
[name]Payge[/name]
[name]Angel[/name] – there were 2 male Angels (both Mexican boys so it’s pronounced ahn-hell) and one girl. This is my name so I’m excited
Lillilee – a coworker said it would sound like she was drunk everytime she introduced herself as an adult
[name]Kennedi[/name]
Guardado (g)
Baylei – supposed to be pronounced bay-lee but I would have said bay-lie
Zoncheus (zon-kee-us)
[name]Itzel[/name] (g)
[name]Destin[/name] (g)
[name]Patience[/name]
Rayla
Aubreanna
[name]Walker[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] *
[name]Haven[/name]
Abraya (uh-bray-uh)
[name]Carsyn[/name] (g)
[name]Layton[/name]
[name]Jett[/name]
Kayte --suppose to me kay-tee
[name]Karle[/name] – suppose to be kar-lee
[name]Jazmyn[/name]
[name]Maddox[/name]
Merrix (g)
[name]Sage[/name] (b)*
Lainee
[name]Cohen[/name]
[name]Amiyah[/name] (a-mee-yuh)
Tydus
[name]Jadin[/name]
Nakiria (nuh-keer-ee-uh)
Kanenn (canon)
[name]Kyler[/name]
[name]Asia[/name] – the girl was [name]Asian[/name]
Zacira (zuh-keer-uh)
Nikalaos
Bralee
Carrigan (g)
Braylee
[name]Bobbie[/name]-[name]Jo[/name] (g)
[name]Precious[/name]
Shoshiana (sho-she-ah-nuh)
Teylee (tay-lee)
[name]Brycen[/name]
Juliona (juliana)
[name]Delbert[/name]
Gabrella
[name]Ashlee[/name]
[name]Serenity[/name]*
[name]Vegas[/name] (g)
Aliber (b) (al-ih-bar)
[name]Tressie[/name]
[name]Brittney[/name]
[name]Ruthie[/name]
[name]Mattea[/name]
[name]Brennan[/name] (b) *
[name]Roman[/name] – apparently they are pronouncing it roh-mahn
[name]Kenzie[/name]
[name]Zane[/name]*

And I know half of you will say, maybe some of these are African American (like one of my coworkers) or they’re ethnic of some kind. But according to [name]Haley[/name] (whose the girl whose class this is) they’re mostly just white/caucasian. No Italians, Greeks or anything. There were 2 Asians and one black girl.

Some off topic things. I talked to you guys about baby boy Faelyn, I asked his parents today why they picked Faelyn for their son, and they said “because it means fairy” A coworker of mine says she wants to name her first daughter [name]Arianna[/name] (air-ee-ah-nuh) Elyzabeth [name]Rose[/name]. I say, why replace the I with a Y and she says “To be different” I say thousands of other people do it and she wouldn’t believe me.
A 12 year old girl I work with, Ashleigh, wants to name her future daughter Immersion. Sigh
Thoughts?

[name]Walker[/name], [name]Anastasia[/name], [name]Jett[/name], [name]Maddox[/name], [name]Mattea[/name], [name]Sage[/name], [name]Ruthie[/name], [name]Roman[/name] (not their prn.) and Zanre are the only ones I find acceptable and actually nice names.

Teylee, Aliber, Gabrella (what is this?), Kanenn, [name]Karle[/name], Kayte, Baylei and a lot of others make me so sad to see. Children actually have to grow up with these names it’s so unfair. I genuinely think only legitimate spellings should be allowed, it’s not to dictate what people name their children just the spellings!

I think the problem is with all of us on nameberry we’re name nerds and we take the time to research and find out about names, trends and popularity but people in real life don’t and that’s where the problem lies because in real life people use the names and spellings they find “kuwl”.

Lillilee is a nightmare!

Are Kayte and [name]Karle[/name] twins? They just seem like they would belong to the same family haha! I think it runs in communities. The school I work at the most is full of boys with fairly traditional names with traditional spellings, but at least 50% of the girls have boys names! There is one family with [name]Reece[/name], [name]Ryan[/name], [name]Ricky[/name], and [name]Riley[/name] all girls! I don’t see how these parents think they are being different when they are surrounded by it.

This list makes me very glad my classmates and I were born before Krateiv spellings were popular.

Isn’t [name]Itzel[/name] a Spanish name? I work at a language school where we have “adult” students from all over the world and we’ve had a few Itzels.

My favourite from this list is Zoncheus -I don’t think I would be able to keep a straight face if I met that child in person. I would have to excuse myself or start coughing excessively. heeheehee

I don’t know if [name]Itzel[/name] is Spanish or not, but she was pretty white looking. Zoncheus makes me giggle too.

I just couldn’t believe all the kr8tiv names in one place…one class! Sigh. It was ridiculous and I said “[name]Haley[/name], I’m writing these down” and she goes “okay” and stood there telling me about how to pronounce them and which ones she liked. I feel bad that [name]Haley[/name] is one of the most normal girl names in her whole class.

Kayte and [name]Karle[/name] aren’t twins but they seems like they should be. They look different and have different last names. I would have pronounced [name]Karle[/name] as [name]Carl[/name].

I like [name]Itzel[/name], I’m pretty sure it’s a name of Mexican or Spanish origin. There are plenty of Mexicans who look white. I prefer [name]Isela[/name] though.

I feel so sorry for the teacher! Too much kree8ivity in one classroom! Some of those names are cool. But I would not be able to keep a straight face with Lillilee and Zoncheus!

My friend just told me that her brother and sister in law named their newborn girl a name I didn’t like at all. To each their own!

The only ones I like are [name]Mattea[/name] and [name]Anastasia[/name]. Maybe [name]Heaven[/name] can teach [name]Nevaeh[/name] how to spell her name. hehe Sorry, couldn’t resist. But I have a feeling that ever since the technology boom, literacy has gone down, therefore name spelling has suffered. I wish I could figure out how to prove that. As for your coworker, hasn’t she realized with all these creative spellings that she would not be giving Elyzabeth a unique name? There’s an Elezabeth in her class, for [name]Pete[/name]'s sake.

Some of these names would be okay if they were spelled correctly and pronounced correctly.

My coworker just seems to not believe that a ton of other people have thought of using a Y first. She thinks she’s the first ever to use a Y.

I thought that too sort of when I saw [name]Nevaeh[/name] and [name]Heaven[/name] in one class with 3 Angels. lol. And I agree with you about technology @[name]Cristina[/name]. Most of the kids I work with hate reading and one woman I work with doesn’t read at all and has to ask me how to spell words like “please”. It’s sad. This class would have some nice names if they were just spelled right, like @girlmeetsbaby said.

[name]Braxton[/name] - this has gotten rather popular. I don’t really love the sound of it.

Elezabeth - I only like 2 spellings of this name: [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Elisabeth[/name].

[name]Kodie[/name] (b) – I would think girl too.

[name]Gavyn[/name] - I like it spelled [name]Gavin[/name]. The y here looks like an attempt to feminize it for a girl.

[name]Nevaeh[/name] - no, don’t like words spelled backwards as names.

[name]Heaven[/name] – not one I would choose.

[name]Avary[/name] (g) - looks like Aviary. I do like [name]Avery[/name].

Madis (g) looks like [name]Madison[/name] with the -on missing.

[name]Jayson[/name] (b) I love [name]Jason[/name] spelled [name]Jason[/name].

Jayeson (b) Another [name]Jason[/name] variant? [name]Don[/name]'t like.

[name]Baylee[/name] not a big fan of [name]Baylee[/name] but it’s better spelled [name]Bailey[/name].

[name]Brason[/name] - I hope we are not in for a bunch of names that rhyme with [name]Jason[/name] and [name]Mason[/name]. Could also be read as bra- son with a lot of teasing potential.

[name]Payge[/name] [name]Paige[/name] is nice.

[name]Angel[/name] – there were 2 male Angels (both Mexican boys so it’s pronounced ahn-hell) and one girl. This is my name so I’m excited. I like [name]Angel[/name] as a Spanish name. For a girl, I prefer [name]Angela[/name].

Lillilee – a coworker said it would sound like she was drunk everytime she introduced herself as an adult hehe, a little too much l.

[name]Kennedi[/name] [name]Kennedy[/name] is alright.

Guardado (g) not familiar with this.

Baylei – supposed to be pronounced bay-lee but I would have said bay-lie worse than [name]Bailee[/name].

Zoncheus (zon-kee-us) brings up images of coughing and lung disease.

[name]Itzel[/name] (g) this is a Spanish name. It’s somewhere on the top 1000 list currently.

[name]Destin[/name] (g) [name]Destiny[/name] without the Y?

[name]Patience[/name] - I try to have patience, but I don’t like it as a name.

Rayla - [name]Kayla[/name], [name]Shayla[/name], [name]Tayla[/name]…

Aubreanna - fancified [name]Aubrey[/name]?

[name]Walker[/name] - not too bad.

[name]Anastasia[/name] * love it!

[name]Haven[/name] - not bad.

Abraya (uh-bray-uh) don’t like the sound.

[name]Carsyn[/name] (g) y or no y, [name]Carson[/name] does not sound feminine to me.

[name]Layton[/name] - pretty nice.

[name]Jett[/name] - nms.

Kayte --suppose to me kay-tee [name]Katie[/name] is nice.

[name]Karle[/name] – suppose to be kar-lee [name]Carly[/name] is okay.

[name]Jazmyn[/name] prefer [name]Jasmine[/name].

[name]Maddox[/name] - okay. This one has a little too much celebrity connection for me.

Merrix (g) - strange.

[name]Sage[/name] (b)* okay, I like [name]Sage[/name] better on girls.

Lainee not fond of the [name]Laney[/name], [name]Lainey[/name] names.

[name]Cohen[/name] - would not use, potential for offending people.

[name]Amiyah[/name] (a-mee-yuh) - okay.

Tydus hmmm… no.

[name]Jadin[/name] - yet another [name]Jayden[/name] variant?

Nakiria (nuh-keer-ee-uh) nms.

Kanenn (canon) ick…[name]Just[/name] use [name]Cannon[/name].

[name]Kyler[/name] [name]Don[/name]'t like this much. Sounds kind of cutesy.

[name]Asia[/name] – the girl was [name]Asian[/name] - nms.

Zacira (zuh-keer-uh) okay.

Nikalaos - might be ethnic spelling.

Bralee not fond of any of the new [name]Bray[/name] and [name]Bri[/name] names like [name]Briley[/name], etc. Looks like Bra- [name]Lee[/name].

Carrigan (g) not to fond of it.
Braylee see Bralee.

[name]Bobbie[/name]-[name]Jo[/name] (g) too country sounding for me.

[name]Precious[/name] - no.

Shoshiana (sho-she-ah-nuh) [name]Just[/name] [name]Shoshana[/name] is nice.

Teylee (tay-lee) no.

[name]Brycen[/name] [name]Bryson[/name] would be preferable.

Juliona (juliana) [name]Juliana[/name] is nicer.
[name]Delbert[/name] - don’t like it.

Gabrella missing an i.

[name]Ashlee[/name] [name]Way[/name] prefer [name]Ashley[/name].

[name]Serenity[/name]* - I don’t mind this. I kind of like it. But what if she’s not serene?

[name]Vegas[/name] (g) just no.

Aliber (b) (al-ih-bar) not familiar with that.

[name]Tressie[/name] no. i like [name]Tess[/name] and [name]Tessa[/name].

[name]Brittney[/name] prefer [name]Brittany[/name].

[name]Ruthie[/name] ehh. not a big fan of [name]Ruth[/name] or [name]Ruthie[/name].

[name]Mattea[/name] - kind of like this.

[name]Brennan[/name] (b) I like this.

[name]Roman[/name] – apparently they are pronouncing it roh-mahn - it’s okay. I think that is the way to pronounce it in some languages.

[name]Kenzie[/name] -I prefer this to [name]Mckenzie[/name].

[name]Zane[/name]* - kind of nice.

Bleh. I guess this is where the “rubber meets the road” in the whole “language evolves” line of thought. Example: English pronouns once consisted of “thee,” “thou,” “ye” and so forth and now we say “that dude.” Although one wonders if “language deteriorates” might be more accurate – especially when an entire generation of given names looks as if the entire generation before flunked spelling class.

I really, really hope that poor Lillilee doesn’t have a speech impediment. If Lillilee is bad, “Wih-wih-wee” is infinitely worse.

Zoncheus literally made me laugh out loud. That poor child.

I was thinking that it might be a generation declining in literacy after all, because I remember I was pretty much the only person throughout my education who really took spelling and grammar seriously. If I were to leave choosing a baby name up to my husband he would either choose Viper, ___ [name]Jr[/name]., or completely botch the spelling of a better name, as most of my friends and acquaintances have. He and 90% of the other people I know can’t spell simple words like “please” or “garage,” and heavily rely on the automatic spelling corrector found in most technology now… All I know is that I’m going to make darn sure my kid knows how to read and write like a pro, so that I don’t have a grandchild name Alixzandar. I feel like it is okay for a language to evolve, but not to mess it up so badly that the previous generation barely recognizes it, and a bit of history (and intelligence, and logic) is lost.

I totally agree with you. My husband and I read a lot. We have enough books in our house to make a small library. We both love art and music and my friends playfully refer to me as grammar nazi. In comparision, besides my closest friend and my husband, most people my own age can barely spell and they have kids named [name]Jaiden[/name] (g), [name]Kaleb[/name], [name]Isabella[/name], things like that. [name]One[/name] of my coworkers yesterday, she’s 40, asked me how to spell graduates. A twelve year old, [name]Ashleigh[/name], wants to name her daughter Immersion one day. During the summer program when I get to be with the kids 8 hours a day, I try to get them to do literary and educational games and activities.

She’ll probably grow out of it. In the meantime, LOL. Is she, by any chance, a Pendulum fan? I love Pendulum, but to name a kid after one of their albums is way too far. Everyone will just think her name is [name]Emerson[/name].

Never thought I would say this but the girl named [name]Brittney[/name] was actually lucky.

lol She listens to [name]Justin[/name] Beiber and [name]One[/name] Direction is about it as far as I know. I’ll ask her today though. She said she heard it at school and it was suppose to be a girls name but she might like it on a boy.

On the other side of the spectrum. A 7 year old I work with, [name]Madison[/name], wants to name her future son [name]Vincent[/name]. I was so happy inside.

Then back to the negative, my coworker who is pregnant, [name]Hayley[/name], wanted to name her son Benntley originally, then changed to [name]Finnegan[/name]. I was so happy. I said “[name]Finn[/name] and [name]Finnegan[/name] are so much better!” Today she said it’s going to be Kasenn. She said if they baby is a girl she’s going to name it Tapanga. Sigh. Babies due in 2 months so I hope she changes her mind again.

Uh-oh, the [name]One[/name] Direction craze spread to the US? >< I am so sorry… well, you never know, she might like Pendulum, too.

Madison sounds like a Berry in the making.

Kasenn and Tapanga… yikes. What do people see in these kinds of names? Especially Kasenn… why does she nneed the double N?

Bralee and [name]Brason[/name] look like they were named after bras
Poor, poor Zoncheus. All I can think of are those sound bubbles from comic books: Zonk! Boink! Wham!

She must have grown up with Boy Meets World. [name]Topanga[/name] [name]Lawrence[/name] made that name seem useable. It wouldn’t be so awful if your coworker spelled it correctly
