Ladies and gents - tell me what you think!

Hey NameBerryites,

I’m a new member here, though I’ve been perusing this site for a while looking for name ideas! DH & I are expecting our first in [name]August[/name] and we’re keeping the sex a surprise, so we have to think of a name for each possibility.

That said, I’d love to get some “objective” outsiders’ views on some of my ideas so far.

If it helps, our last name rhymes with [name]Garfield[/name], but starts with an H (don’t want to actually spell it out!)

Ok, here we go:

GIRLS
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]

([name]Kinda[/name] loving [name]Cordelia[/name] as a MN…)

BOYS
[name]Silas[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]Silas[/name] [name]Everett[/name]
[name]Declan[/name] [name]Shea[/name]
[name]Angus[/name] ([name]Gus[/name]) [name]Shea[/name]
[name]Charles[/name] ([name]Charlie[/name]) - worried that this sounds weird with our LN?

Any thoughts off the top of your heads? Suggestions? Different combinations?

Thanks in advance!

Great list!
[name]Cordelia[/name] is wonderful, and I especially like it in the middle since it’s so whimsical and fun. [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] sounds awesome; there is just something about that name that really makes me smile. But, I think my favorite first name from your list is definitely [name]Audrey[/name]. It’s just so elegant and a sophisticated, whereas [name]Ruby[/name] might not age as well. [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] also sounds very nice, though the flow might be slightly less than ideal due to the repeating long e sounds - not really anything to give much thought to though. I think you really just have to decide what feel you’re going for in choosing between [name]Audrey[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] since they give off such different vibes. Lots of people love [name]Gemma[/name], but personally I think it’s very babyish, and I think nn [name]Gem[/name] just sounds bratty, and I would take this one off the list.

From your boys list, I love [name]Charles[/name] and I don’t think you should worry about [name]Charlie[/name] sort of rhyming with your last name, because more than likely when going by his full name he will use [name]Charles[/name], not [name]Charlie[/name] _______. I saw that you love nn [name]Gus[/name], but I would suggest that you use the full name [name]August[/name] rather than [name]Angus[/name], and that would be hands down my first choice! I adore the name [name]August[/name]! (Of course, if you plan to have more children down the line, keep in mind that [name]Audrey[/name] and [name]August[/name] don’t really work together well as brother and sister - too close). [name]August[/name] is just so distinguished yet edgy, vintage yet modern sounding - I think it’s perfection in a name. [name]Angus[/name] has a nice enough sound, but all I think of is beef. I’m not crazy about [name]Shea[/name] in the middle; I think it sounds a bit weak. I would go with [name]August[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name]!

Haha [name]Angus[/name] beef - yes the thought crossed my mind too. I don’t think it’s as big of an association where I’m from, but I see what you mean.

[name]August[/name] is very nice, but there’s a good chance he’ll be born in [name]August[/name]…wondering if that’s a little weird?

Thanks for your thoughts - I really appreciate getting some fresh opinions!

[name]Audrey[/name] - One of the classiest names around! You can’t go wrong with [name]Audrey[/name]!

[name]Ruby[/name] - [name]Lovely[/name], although I agree [name]Audrey[/name] may age a little better.

[name]Gemma[/name] - I feel like this is trendier than the classic [name]Audrey[/name]. Keep in mind there are lots of Emmas. But I’m biased because I know a [name]Gemma[/name] that I don’t like. Be aware that in some parts of the US (if you live in the US) it will be pronounced “Jimma” so her nn, if she uses it, would be [name]Jim[/name].

[name]Silas[/name] - This name sounds sinister to me, but I think that’s only because of Heroes’s Sylar. But I’m probably the only one. Ignore me.

[name]Declan[/name] - This feels trendier than [name]Silas[/name] or [name]Charles[/name]. Probably because of the 2 syllable ending in -n trend for boys now.

[name]Angus[/name] ([name]Gus[/name]) - Not my style. I too wonder if it’s weird to name kids the same name as the month their born in.

[name]Charles[/name] ([name]Charlie[/name]) - If I were dishonest I would try to dissuade you from using this name since I would love to name a future son [name]Charlie[/name]. I do think, [name]Charlie[/name] *arfield is a bit hard to say, but not necessarily a dealbreaker.

[name]Charles[/name] and [name]Audrey[/name] are my favorite. I think both names will age well and are timeless classics - they are never a wrong choice!

I think [name]Charles[/name] will sound fine with your last name.

Great list!

I love [name]Cordelia[/name] in the middle-- beautiful!
GIRLS
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]-- [name]Gemma[/name] is nice but doesn’t wow me

[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]-- i also worry that [name]Ruby[/name] may not age so well. but it is cute and sounds great with [name]Cordelia[/name]

[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]-- [name]Audrey[/name] seems to be a favorite on here. It’s nice but feels just a bit ‘buttoned-up’ to me, personally

Suggestion: [name]Alice[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]-- I love this! It has that vintage charm, has the whimsy/fun factor that [name]Audrey[/name] (to me) is missing, and seems more versatile than [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Gemma[/name]. What do you think?

BOYS
[name]Silas[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name]-- love!

[name]Silas[/name] [name]Everett[/name]-- love these names separately, especially [name]Silas[/name]. But to me, both of these names sound kind of vintage Southern (in a good way), so I would pair either of these with something more classic and neutral-sounding (if that makes sense)

[name]Declan[/name] [name]Shea[/name]-- not a fan of [name]Shea[/name]; [name]Declan[/name] is nice though. [name]Declan[/name] [name]James[/name]? [name]Declan[/name] [name]Everett[/name]? I still think you have nicer options

[name]Angus[/name] ([name]Gus[/name]) [name]Shea[/name]-- I like [name]Angus[/name] but also prefer [name]August[/name]. Some would argue that it’s only appropriate to name him that if he’s born in [name]August[/name]! [name]Just[/name] depends what you’re comfortable with, though!

[name]Charles[/name] ([name]Charlie[/name]) - is it the repeating ‘ar’ sound with your LN that bothers you? I think it sounds really nice, actually! [name]How[/name] about [name]Charles[/name] [name]Everett[/name]? [name]Love[/name] this!

Favorites: [name]Alice[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Silas[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name], [name]Charles[/name] [name]Everett[/name]

Good luck

Thanks for all of these great thoughts! It’s so helpful!

hoodie - [name]Alice[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] is a great suggestion! I’ll have to see what hubby thinks. I like the other combos you suggested too - thanks so much!

And yes, it’s the “[name]Char[/name]” “Har” thing that gives me pause. Hasn’t pushed me to take it off my list though!

[name]Happy[/name] to help, and I’m glad you liked some of the suggestions! I do see what you mean about [name]Charles[/name]/[name]Charlie[/name] with your last name, and sometimes repeating sounds do bother me. But again, in this case I actually think it adds to the name. Some naming schools of thought (yes, apparently there are such things!) suggest that first and last names should share common sounds to make them memorable and give them that little something extra! I don’t follow this strictly, but I think it works in this case. [name]Just[/name] wondering, does your LN have a T in it, or does it rhyme exactly with [name]Garfield[/name]? Either way, I think [name]Charles[/name]/[name]Charlie[/name] works nicely!

[name]Silas[/name] [name]Everett[/name] is SO handsome. I love that combo. [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] is another show stopper.

my votes go to…
ruby and angus.
great names xoxox

Thanks for the thoughts/votes!

hoodie - no, it doesn’t have a “T”, though a lot of people will say it that way at first - I suppose it looks like it should have one! But yeah, it is really [name]Garfield[/name] with an “H”. The more I say [name]Charles[/name] with it, the more I actually like it. But I think DH’s fave is [name]Silas[/name], so we’ll see!

All your name choices are very nice so your really cant go wrong.

[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]- A classic name i just have a bad taste in my mouth about this name from a girl i dont like

My favorites:
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Declan[/name] [name]Shea[/name]
I also love [name]Angus[/name] and [name]Charles[/name]!

[name]Hi[/name]! I listed my favorites below with some other suggestions:

GIRLS
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] or [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] or [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]*–my favorite

BOYS
[name]Declan[/name] [name]Shea[/name] ([name]Shea[/name] is a wonderful Irish name…great as a mn!)
[name]Charles[/name] [name]Donovan[/name]

WDYT?

Thanks everyone!

I’m Irish, so I think we could get away with an Irish name, or at least a middle name. Though I do worry about [name]Declan[/name] being a bit unrecognizable in [name]Canada[/name].

I’d also considered [name]Caroline[/name] as a MN - really pretty and flows well.

[name]Charles[/name] [name]Donovan[/name] sounds nice too.

More choices to bring to DH! Thanks!
