Anybody know any names commonly used during the Renaissance (they could have been popular at the time or unique). I’m interested in female names from different times and would like to have a list of these. Thanks!
According to an article I just found online some names are [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], [name_f]Isabetta[/name_f], [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], [name_f]Madalena[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], and Nencia.
[name_f]Isabetta[/name_f] & [name_f]Madalena[/name_f] are just my style. I especially like the nickname [name_f]Mada[/name_f] to go with [name_f]Madalena[/name_f] + it’s such a relief from the Madalynn/Madeline family of names
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucrezia[/name_f]
bump. I’m really interested in getting more knowledge than just a google search
Most of these names were similar to today names. It’s just that spellings weren’t standardized and thus you’ll get Madelena (Magdalena in Italian, in fact) or some other unusual spelling.
Also, many of those Renaissance names are Italian because Italy was center of movement of renaissance art and thought.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you know whether or not names from the medieval period would share this similarity? [name_u]Or[/name_u] I think they’d be primarily [name_f]English[/name_f]
For the Italian Renaissance, these come to mind:
[name_f]Alessandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
Contessina
Costanza
Eleonora/Leonora
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Giulia[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucrezia[/name_f]
Luigia
[name_f]Maddalena[/name_f]
[name_u]Maria[/name_u]
Piccarda
[name_f]Silvia[/name_f]
Many of these would be comparable to Medieval [name_f]English[/name_f] names – e.g. Costanza = [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] = [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_u]Maria[/name_u] = [name_f]Mary[/name_f], etc.
