Lame

Lame!
[name]Claudette[/name] means lame, but I love it anyway. I think it’s familiar but rare & pretty yet strong…should I let a negative meaning stop me? To me [name]Claudette[/name] doesn’t feel connected to lame- I makes me think of [name]Colette[/name] & the [name]Claudine[/name] books & it kind of reminds me of [name]Chloe[/name], a name I’ve always loved but find a bit too overused. And [name]Claudette[/name] feels vintagey & glam too. Wdyt?

I wouldn’t let the meaning get you down. A lot of lovely names have miserable meanings.

I don’t use names with negative meanings, so I’d nix it. What the name means is what you’re calling your child, so negative meanings are a big no no for me.

It is a lovely name, I agree with you about the vintagey, glam, strong and pretty at the same time vibe! But I try and avoid negative meanings in names too. Choosing a name gives you a chance to express your hopes and dreams for the new little one, and though I don’t think there’s in reality some kind of prophecy or whatever in the name, I’d still want to choose something positive. I don’t know the meanings of these names, but some of the others you mentioned - and still others - you may like, and find they have nicer meanings.
[name]Colette[/name]
[name]Claudia[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Cressida[/name]
[name]Constance[/name]
[name]Odette[/name]
[name]Yvette[/name]

I think it’s lovely despite the meaning. [name]Mary[/name] means “bitter”, [name]Cecelia[/name] means “blind one”, and [name]Leah[/name] means “weary”, but they are all popular.

I think it is a lovely name. It is the name of one of my friends. She doesn’t even know the meaning of her name, which goes to tell you that people irl don’t really know the meanings of their names. If it really bothers you, don’t use it but I say it is a lovely name.

I don’t think it’s as pretty as [name]Colette[/name] or [name]Cosette[/name] or [name]Yvette[/name]. A little mustier & not as chic, you know? So yes, the negative meaning would tip the scale for me, unfortch.

I agree. The clod problem…

If a name had a negative meaning, I wouldn’t use it for my kid no matter how much I liked the sound. I hated having part of my name that meant sorrowful.

Growing up I had a friend named [name]Melanie[/name], which means cloaked in black…we used to laugh about it. But she actually has ended up having a tragic life! I don’t really know if I’m superstitious about this stuff…

I like everything else about [name]Claudette[/name]. I like that it’s a bit old fashioned & not as slick as [name]Claudia[/name] or as marshmallowy as [name]Colette[/name] as Cosy as [name]Cosette[/name] or as ott as [name]Clementine[/name]…

The thing is that name freaks–and I say that affectionately, as I most certainly am one–are under the impression that the rest of the world will somehow go back and look up the meaning of a name and make fun of it. The fact is that most people don’t. I have a feeling that the meaning of this name has something to do with Francois I’s wife, [name]Queen[/name] [name]Claude/name whose main feature was that she was lame. Which is unfortunate. She was also a really nice lady, but that seems to go ignored.

Anyway, I would think of [name]Claudette[/name] [name]Colbert[/name]–spunky, a great comedienne, beautiful–before I thought of the meaning. That said, I’m not a huge fan of the name by itself, and prefer other ette names like [name]Jeanette[/name], [name]Odette[/name], [name]Cosette[/name]. It’s not terrible, though.

I have this problem with [name]Claudia[/name]. :frowning: I haven’t decided yet how much the meaning of the name matters to me. I certainly don’t want my daughter to ask me why I named her lame, and my only response being “well, I liked the name”. I think it would have to be more than liking the name, it would have to have some sort of personal significance to me, even if it was simply a namesake of someone I really admired, or a character I loved.
