Lang vs Odin

I like the short sound of Lang, and it is very unique. It means “Tall”, and with my husband being 6’7” I thought it would be a cute way to honor him. Any variations of the name Lang could also be an option. We have considered [name_m]Langston[/name_m], but have been told it sounds too pretentious. [name_m]Odin[/name_m] sounds a little sweeter to me, but also maybe too trendy. What are your thoughts?

I prefer [name_m]Odin[/name_m], I just prefer the sound of it. I wouldn’t call it “sweet”, though, more powerful and dramatic.

It does feel a little trendy at the moment, because it’s rising alongside other god and mythological names like [name_u]Orion[/name_u] and [name_u]Atlas[/name_u], but I don’t think it’s going to shoot up to Top 10 or anything like that.

I like the meaning that Lang has for you, but as a [name_m]German[/name_m] speaker I just find it a bit odd as a name (it literally means “long”). I’m sure I’d quickly get used to it though! [name_m]Langston[/name_m] seems like the most obvious option for a longer form, and I don’t find it pretentious.

Olin is an option which kind of blends the sounds of the two. It’s a Scandinavian name meaning “ancestor’s heir”.

I think [name_m]Langston[/name_m] nn Lang is great and not too pretentious at all.

Out of these two, I prefer [name_m]Odin[/name_m]! Cool sounds and look

I like [name_m]Langton[/name_m]!

What about…
[name_u]Langley[/name_u]
[name_u]Starling[/name_u]
[name_u]Sterling[/name_u]
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]
[name_u]Liam[/name_u] [name_u]George[/name_u]
[name_m]Larian[/name_m] [name_m]Graham[/name_m]

I also feel like you might like the name [name_m]Bingham[/name_m], nn [name_m]Bing[/name_m]. Since it’s another unique name.
[name_m]Lance[/name_m]/Lawrence also has a similar vibe.

An alternative to [name_m]Odin[/name_m] could be [name_m]Ogden[/name_m]! I think it’s a really charming underused name.

I prefer [name_m]Odin[/name_m]. I think Lang just sounds a bit unfinished but think it would be a nice nickname for [name_m]Langston[/name_m].

I have never met a person with these names. I like that they are unique and unexpected , but recognizable. I would probably pick [name_m]Odin[/name_m] but
I think I would prefer a longer name with the nn Lang ;
[name_u]Langley[/name_u]
[name_m]Langston[/name_m]
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]

I don’t think [name_m]Langston[/name_m] is pretentious. It has literary cred with [name_m]Langston[/name_m] [name_m]Hughes[/name_m]. It’s a nice name and you enjoy the meaning, so I think it’s great for you.

I much prefer [name_m]Langston[/name_m] nn Lang! I never really got on board with the mythological names.

Of the two, I would pick [name_m]Odin[/name_m]–it just sounds a little more complete to me. I also like @katinka’s suggestion of [name_m]Olin[/name_m]. I don’t think [name_m]Langston[/name_m] is pretentious though! [name_u]Landon[/name_u] also comes to mind–the sound isn’t quite there, but I think it’s close enough to work.

Yes, [name_m]Ogden[/name_m]! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see someone else who sees the appeal of this. We had an [name_m]Ogden[/name_m] [name_m]Nash[/name_m] poem read at our wedding :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Lang is a cute name, but I think it would work better as a nickname! [name_m]Langston[/name_m] doesn’t feel pretentious, I like the literary association. I second the suggestion of [name_u]Langley[/name_u], and also want to suggest [name_m]Langdon[/name_m]/Langden!
[name_m]Odin[/name_m] is nice too. I think Lang is sweeter though, [name_m]Odin[/name_m] feels very strong to me. It’s also rather trendy at the moment, I’ve seen a lot of people use it.
So Lang gets my vote! I just prefer it as a nickname.

I prefer [name_m]Odin[/name_m] as well! In [name_m]Dutch[/name_m], Lang literally means Tall, and it would feel a bit weird to me if I meet someone and he’s like ‘Hey, I’m Lang/Tall’.
[name_m]Odin[/name_m] is pretty cool! Could one of the following names be an option?
[name_m]Otis[/name_m]
[name_m]Donar[/name_m]
[name_u]Rome[/name_u]
Wodan
[name_m]Leon[/name_m]

I love the mysterious and charming [name_m]Odin[/name_m]! I don’t see it as a trendy name at all. I rarely see it in this forum. [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Langston[/name_m] would be really cool!

I prefer [name_m]Odin[/name_m] myself! I’ve always been quite fond of him.

Lang I can see as a middle, but I’d be tempted to say it the [name_m]German[/name_m] way (which is a bit like lahng, if that makes sense), and doesn’t sound as namey as the beginning of [name_m]Langston[/name_m]. There is [name_m]Langdon[/name_m], too, which reminds me of [name_u]Landon[/name_u] a lot, which I am quite fond of?

I wouldn’t do just Lang personally—it’s an interesting honor proposition, but as someone who knows even just a very tiny bit of [name_m]German[/name_m], it seems a bit random as a name choice? A bit like Blonde, Tall, Skinny, or Stocky as a name to me. So it doesn’t really seem namey to me, but I do like it as a nickname for [name_m]Langdon[/name_m] or even [name_m]Langston[/name_m] (which I think is a great name, for what it’s worth!).

Good luck!
