I was working on my short list for girl names and was surprised to hear that my husband really likes [name_f]Lark[/name_f] as a name. I love one syllable, easy to spell nature names (we already have a DD named [name_f]Rose[/name_f]) and I think it goes well with our last name, so I’m all for it. Only thing is, I couldn’t think of a nickname, and I know we call our DD by her nickname ([name_f]Rosie[/name_f]) often. So, what would you think of [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Lark[/name_f]? I know it’s traditionally a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], would it be weird to call her that?
I would also consider [name_f]Lark[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], to have more of a tie to that nickname, I suppose.
I’d love any thoughts on the nickname issue and thoughts on [name_f]Lark[/name_f] in general, as a sister to [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
Thanks!!!
I think [name_f]Lark[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] being called [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is fine. It’s a beautiful name and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is a cute nickname. Anyway I pretty much think a nickname can be anything you like, at least with [name_f]Lark[/name_f]-[name_u]Bird[/name_u]-[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] it makes perfect sense how the name came about.
I don’t understand this trend of naming a child a name and calling it a nickname that doesn’t come from the name.
I would just name her [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] if that’s what you like.
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] or [name_f]Bridgette[/name_f]/[name_f]Bridget[/name_f] [name_f]Lark[/name_f] could work for using [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] as a nickname.
I agree with this.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]” and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] make such a charming sibling set.
@autumnreverie Perhaps I didn’t make this clear: I don’t actually prefer the name [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], I prefer the name [name_f]Lark[/name_f]. I just like having a nickname as well as the given name, so I couldn’t think of a nickname option for [name_f]Lark[/name_f], and floated the idea of [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] to see if it would work.
If it doesn’t seem to be a natural fit, I’ll probably discard it and move on. Thanks for your input.
I don’t find [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] attractive at all! I’d stick with [name_f]Lark[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is a cute nickname for [name_f]Lark[/name_f] and makes complete sense, whether you use [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as the middle name or not.
Not every nickname relates to people’s names anyway though. [name_u]Scout[/name_u] has nothing to do with [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_f]Louise[/name_f], for example.
I think it’s fine. you’re her parents, you can nickname her whatever you want! my brother and I had a million nicknames that my dad called us consistently! my mom always called us by our actual names. and my dad rarely did.
I think it is adorable! And frankly I find that [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] being somehow “reserved” for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is absurd.
And as for the name your kid what you’re going to call it mentality- really? [name_m]How[/name_m] boring is that? People are complex things and mothers who raise them should have as many names to call out as they like. I have at least three I often use to call my daughter. One set facet of a name to be used the entire life of my child? No thank you.
