I found out our 3rd (and final) baby is a boy and we are struggling with names. We LOVED [name_u]Lark[/name_u] for a girl and have been trying to find a nature name for a boy. We do like [name_u]Forest[/name_u], [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], [name_u]Cedar[/name_u], [name_u]Onyx[/name_u] and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], but today I was feeling pretty sad about never getting to use [name_u]Lark[/name_u] since this is our last baby. It occurred to me that maybe [name_u]Lark[/name_u] could work for a boy??? There are definitely more girls named [name_u]Lark[/name_u] each year, but its by no means a popular name for either gender. We have two daughters already and they both have gender neutral names so I also don’t want a boy to have a name that is more “girly” than my girls’ names. Anyways what do you think? [name_m]Can[/name_m] there be a boy [name_u]Lark[/name_u]? Would you assume [name_u]Lark[/name_u] was a girl? Thanks!
I think it works!
Some people on nameberry may quickly assume that Lark is feminine, but that’s because all of us love names and a lot of us have seen Lark used in other users’ female name combos. In real life, where it’s a rare name, I don’t think people would think of Lark as too gendered!
Plus, it’s literally the name of a bird, I don’t see why it should only be used on girls. The short, -k ending sound reminds me of popular boy names like Jack and Blake as well, so even though it’s unique it wouldn’t be weird. I’d go for it!
I definitely think [name_u]Lark[/name_u] suits a boy. As emmievis said it’s a bird. It’s also very similar to [name_m]Mark[/name_m]!
Maybe you could use as a middle name if you’re not sure?
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Forest[/name_u] from your list btw
[name_u]Larkin[/name_u]?
lark totally works for a boy !! i met a little one just last week !!
i say go for it
I love [name_u]Lark[/name_u] for a boy. It’s really sweet.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] this idea! [name_u]Lark[/name_u] is sweet but the sound is simple and strong and totally gender neutral in my book. As @tallemaja said, the K ending is reminiscent of lots of male names, like [name_u]Jack[/name_u] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m]. I think it would be super cool for a boy.
I can see [name_u]Lark[/name_u] being used on a boy! It’s unisex to me and it’s a lovely name!
I know someone with an Uncle L@rk!
I think it totally works for a boy, especially given that it’s not a common name. It’s really lovely actually!
I love the names you have in the running, particularly [name_u]Forest[/name_u] & [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] but in answer to your question - yes there can absolutely be a boy [name_u]Lark[/name_u]! I think it would be a wonderful choice and am in complete agreement with everyone else.
[name_u]Lark[/name_u] is definitely more popular for girls but it’s not a very popular name in general so it’s pretty unlikely that you would meet multiple other girl Larks.
I might think [name_u]Lark[/name_u] was a girl but mostly because it seems like girls get more of the imaginative, more out there names compared to boys. It’s not because I think [name_u]Lark[/name_u] sounds feminine.
If your girls names lean masculine unisex, like [name_u]Forest[/name_u] or [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], then [name_u]Lark[/name_u] might sound too feminine but otherwise I think it’s fine.
[name_u]Lark[/name_u] 100% works for a boy! I actually prefer it that way (though it is also lovely for a girl). It’s a fabulous choice!
This is what I was going to suggest!
I love Lark and think it 100% works for a boy, it doesn’t feel too girly to me and I think it will feel especially gender neutral next to your other kids names if they’re very gender neutral. But if you’re feeling like you want Lark to lean a little more masculine, you could go with Larkin with the nickname Lark which is also adorable. Larkin is an Irish name in its own right
There’s a celebrity named [name_u]Lark[/name_u] Voorhies; she played [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] [name_m]Turtle[/name_m] on Saved By the [name_u]Bell[/name_u] Since that’s the only [name_u]Lark[/name_u] I know about, I do think girl. [name_m]Just[/name_m] being honest! Others who don’t know of any [name_u]Lark[/name_u] probably won’t feel this way. What about the name [name_u]Fox[/name_u] instead?
I would assume [name_u]Lark[/name_u] is a girl simply because I’ve heard it used more often for girls (and may use it one day), but nature names are certainly not owned by any one gender. Like pps mentioned, [name_u]Larkin[/name_u] would be a great option for a more “masculine” version of [name_u]Lark[/name_u]. [name_u]Lark[/name_u] also works in the middle spot for a lot of your other choices as well. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] [name_u]Lark[/name_u]!
I think it could work! [name_f]My[/name_f] mind did go to a girl first, but I know if one… then the more I thought I also know of a boy, but I think his is [name_u]Larkin[/name_u].
@spatty1986 I love [name_u]Fox[/name_u]! It’s actually my grandfather’s middle name (and his mother’s maiden name). I’ve always wanted to use it, but my sister beat me to it!
Thank you to everyone for your input! With [name_m]Mark[/name_m] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m] I’m definitely thinking [name_u]Lark[/name_u] could work for a boy. And [name_u]Larkin[/name_u] is a great way to make it a bit more masculine too! Thanks again!
