I can really do with your input! I am due in 3 weeks and in our last scan we found out we are actually having a little girl instead of a boy! So the boy list is out of the window and I am really finding myself struggling with girl names…
To give you a bit of context, our surname is Da [name_f]Silva[/name_f]. I am Dutch and my partner is South African (Portuguese heritage) and we are living in the UK.
My partner and I have very different tastes in names. I like short and strong, my partner long and feminine. For example, I love [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Freida[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. My partner loves [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].
Currently we have a few contenders;
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] (I can still use nina for short)
[name_f]Elena[/name_f] ([name_f]Ella[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for short)
[name_f]Milena[/name_f] ([name_f]Mila[/name_f] or [name_f]Lena[/name_f] for short)
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
I would love to hear your thoughts on the contenders and very open to your suggestions of other girl names that go nicely with our surname.
We will be using [name_f]Maria[/name_f] as a second name.
Great choices! I love [name_f]Allegra[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] ([name_u]Sasha[/name_u]), Fleurange, [name_f]Nicolina[/name_f], [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]. Best wishes!!
Congrats on your pregnancy and welcome to Nameberry! I like [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] the best with your surname (the name is too pretty and luscious to care about the allergy medication connection). Second choice would be [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. I would avoid another name too similar to Da [name_f]Silva[/name_f] ([name_f]Milena[/name_f] and [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] both share an “il”). Here are some other suggestions.
Hmm…
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - A gorgeous choice she sounds really elegant and looks so pretty. She’s a ballerina name! I love it. I also love the [name_f]Nina[/name_f] nickname for [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] it adds a even more stylistically crispness.
[name_f]Elena[/name_f] - I love this name she’s such a pretty wintry inspired choice. I also adore the nutcracker style of it. She has a great crispness. I adore the pronunciation eh [name_m]LAY[/name_m] nuh it’s just sooo lovely and sounds awesome with your surname.
[name_f]Milena[/name_f] - Another delightful choice. She sounds so pretty and very light. I also love the [name_f]Milly[/name_f]/[name_f]Mila[/name_f] nickname it’s sweet. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I love this choice I’m not sure how she works with Da [name_f]Silva[/name_f].
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f] - Not keen on this choice, it just doesn’t sound attractive to me, I’m not keen on it.
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] - [name_m]Ah[/name_m] I love this choice! She sounds so elegant and dainty. I love this name it’s so pretty. I also love the [name_f]Cami[/name_f] nickname it’s really sweet. Other nicknames that I love are [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], and [name_f]Ami[/name_f].
My favourite name with your surname is [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] Da [name_f]Silva[/name_f] : )
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is my favorite! but I also love [name_f]Mila[/name_f], so [name_f]Milena[/name_f] or [name_f]Camila[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mila[/name_f] would be lovely as well.
Have you thought about using [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] with [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as a nickname. [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] Da [name_f]Silva[/name_f] sounds lovely.
I also think [name_f]Elena[/name_f] is a great name that sounds perfect with your surname.
Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
I like [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]! It is beautiful, and has many nickname options like [name_u]Val[/name_u], [name_f]Tina[/name_f], and [name_f]Nina[/name_f]. [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] Da [name_f]Silva[/name_f] flows very nicely. I also like [name_f]Elena[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] De [name_f]Silva[/name_f]. [name_f]Elena[/name_f] is only 2 syllables so it is still short and strong, and it is good that your husband likes it.
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Elena[/name_f] are my favorites. I also like [name_f]Camilla[/name_f].
my fav is [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] da [name_f]Silva[/name_f] - great rhythm
im like your husband - i go for longer names instead of legally naming someone a nickname they may want to ‘grow out of’ as an adult
[name_f]Elena[/name_f] ([name_f]Ella[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for short) - dont like either of these two too popular nicknames
[name_f]Milena[/name_f] ([name_f]Mila[/name_f] or [name_f]Lena[/name_f] for short) - prefer Milerna for a [name_f]Millie[/name_f] nn. also loving Melfina.
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f] - nn [name_f]Ally[/name_f] is too plain, plus just never sounded very pleasant
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] - especially in the UK, id never use this name. i will always think of the adulteress.
other ideas:
[name_f]Leontine[/name_f]
[name_f]Maudlin[/name_f]
[name_f]Odeelia[/name_f]
Marchline
Wow thanks everybody for your great comments and suggestions!
I think for now [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] stay on the top of the list.
I’m really happy with your thoughts on [name_f]Milena[/name_f]; it was my partner’s suggestion and I had never heard it before.
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] would still be an option since it is a wink to my grandfather ([name_f]Camiel[/name_f]) who passed away.
Anyway, some great food for thought and I am sure we will know exactly who our baby is once she’s there! X
We both still like the name but I am unsure about the pronounciation. I wouldn’t want her to have to go through life correcting people on how to say her name properly.
Am I just being difficult? [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_f]Elena[/name_f]?
I’m partial to [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] as it’s my daughter’s name We got it from the [name_m]Longfellow[/name_m] poem “The Children’s Hour”…it’s a poem about the eternal love he has for his children. So sweet Since it’s not that common some people think it’s weird and we got some crap from family members for it (I would recommend not sharing before she is born, we made that mistake).
ps sorry they got the sex wrong on the ultrasound! That must have thrown you for a loop! I’m terrified of that happening to us…I’m pregnant with our second and we were told girl but I’m still worried they are wrong!
My favorite is [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]! [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] Da [name_f]Silva[/name_f] is so luscious sounding, haha. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is an absolutely adorable nickname.
