It seems like all the girl names hubby and I agree on sound terrible with our last name. The last name is [name_m]Farmer[/name_m]. Some of the girl names we’ve been crushing on lately are [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Colette[/name_f] to name just a few. [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] are topping the list right now but I feel like paired with our last name they sound more like a silly occupation than a beautiful name. We’ve pretty much scratched [name_f]Lily[/name_f] off the list just because [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] sounds ridiculous. [name_f]Colette[/name_f] is still in the running but it’s my least favorite. I think all of these are beautiful names, but when paired with our last name I think they sound silly. Am i just over analyzing? any suggestions? Thanks!
[name_f]Colette[/name_f] sounds perfectly fine with [name_m]Farmer[/name_m]. I would avoid any word-names since [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] is such a literal last name (esp anything earth-related like a color or a flower). So yes, I would scrap [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f].
A similar vibe would include:
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] (yes, it’s a flower in Swedish, but does anyone know that?)
[name_f]Layla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
I don’t think you are over analyzing! I agree that [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] are a bit much. However [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] and [name_f]Colette[/name_f] [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] work just fine!
I WISH my last name were [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] instead of the difficult to spell 3 syllable thing whose pronunciation is the least intuitive one possible, but anyway…
I think that [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] F@rmer sounds just fine. [name_f]Colette[/name_f] has no problems at all. I would avoid anything that is botanical or foodie in an easy to visualize way (ex. [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] & [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] are fine cause you don’t have an image that springs to mind as strongly as with [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f]) the only other name I would avoid is [name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f] works the best with [name_m]Farmer[/name_m]. [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] the least well. [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] I don’t love with [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] because they both have the -ar sound in the first syllable. But of course, this is nitpicking.
Since you like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Colette[/name_f], maybe you’d like [name_f]Calla[/name_f]? That might work better than [name_f]Lily[/name_f] since most wouldn’t know the flower connection.

I don’t think you’re overanalyzing. Sometimes last names are tough. If I were to have a kid, the last name would be the name of a country, so that’s hard to match, too. I also agree that while your short list is beautiful, it doesn’t really work with Farmer, with the exception of Colette (but personally, Colette is nms). I think what you need to look for is a long name, ideally around three syllables. Here are some ideas I have for you!
The first name that came to my mind was Celia Farmer. I like this because it’s three syllables but doesn’t look too overbearing on paper. I think this is a good fit with the names you and your SO already like, and it is personally my top pic! Some sample middle names:
Celia Clare Farmer
Celia Jade Farmer
Celia Lynne Farmer
You could even go for Celia Ivy Farmer.
Other names that I think would work well:
Katherine / Catherine Farmer
Eleanora Farmer (nn: endless! Lenore, Nora, Ellen, Ellie. I think this name is so beautiful.)
Veronica Farmer
Arielle Farmer
