Last name problem

My last name is pronounced like “Noise” the issue is that to my ears anything that ends in an “a” sounds like “annoys” for instance…

[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] Noyes sounds like [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] Annoys to me…

The problem is I like A LOT of names that end with A

[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_f]Clea[/name_f], etc.

What are your thoughts? Would you totally avoid any name that ends in an “a”. Is it terrible obvious to you? Are there any similar names that don’t have the “annoys” at the end?

Thanks!
[name_f]Katie[/name_f]

It doesn’t seem that obvious to me. Maybe something with a soft ‘a’
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] Noise doesn’t sound like Lyr Annoys to me for example

I have a friend named [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] Noyes and I’ve never heard “annoys” in it. I think you’re OK to pick a name ending in ‘A’

Thanks! Maybe it’s more worrisome if the name is a name in its own right without an a. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] are names while [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] is a name and Mirand is not?

I agree with prev. posters! I think because of the stress on certain syllables, some names make this more of a problem. Also that [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is a name all it’s own (and highly recognizable). Mirand, on the other hand, wouldn’t be. Perhaps a little bit of a longer -a name would help in this situation.

I agree! Perhaps something like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]?

Feminine names that don’t end in a are tough:

[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Francine[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Christine[/name_f]
[name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
Sondrine
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]

Are a few of my favorites

Exactly. People might here [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] Annoys, or even [name_u]Lyle[/name_u] Annoys, but [name_m]Cor[/name_m] Annoys won’t be a problem

This is the kind of thing that would bother me. I’d choose a name that doesn’t end in A. Personal choice though, and plenty of other people don’t seem to be bothered by it.

I’d see if there was another was around it… like where it can be used as a nickname or a very similar sounding name or another pleasant name with a similar meaning

[name_f]Cora[/name_f] - could be short for [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] or [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]
[name_f]Aria[/name_f] - I would stick to [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] or maybe go in a different musical direction (due to the meaning of [name_f]Aria[/name_f]) like [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cady[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] - [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilah[/name_f] - Maybe [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] or [name_f]Lilo[/name_f]
[name_f]Clea[/name_f] - [name_f]Cecilie[/name_f], [name_f]Celine[/name_f], [name_f]Cecile[/name_f]… all with the nn [name_f]Clea[/name_f] or even the beautiful [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] (a much classier route to [name_f]Heaven[/name_f] than Naveah)

I know…I’m realizing it bothers me even if people say it’s not a big deal lol. Any non ending a names you’d suggest?

Great suggestions! [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is number one on my list as well as [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f] to break up the annoys part, but I worry about 6 little Charlottes being in her class :frowning:

Yeah, I think maybe stay away from names that are also names without the ‘A’. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Christina[/name_f] etc. I like the names [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Cora[/name_f] from your list and they both sound fine with your last name.

I also like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] for you if you want to avoid A endings all together.

I love all of these names! My favorites are [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. So sad to say they are out :frowning: [name_f]Violet[/name_f] sounded Like Violent Noise to me so I named one of my chickens [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] is a niece, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] are friends baby names. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] bad association. Any other suggestions? I like the track you are on!

Personally i’d avoid names with ‘a’ endings. I like the suggestion of getting to an ‘a’ name by having it as a nickname of a longer name which doesnt end in ‘a’.

[name_u]Arya[/name_u] might be a nn for Arietty, [name_f]Cora[/name_f] for [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] or the more unusual precious ‘stone’ [name_f]Coral[/name_f] etc.
