Last Names for First Names - Inspiration please

Looking for some inspiration for a baby boy name (have about 7 months till due date). We generally like last names for first names and are considering the following (with the issues we have identified for each one):

  • [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] - We love [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] and like the nickname [name_u]Sully[/name_u] but worry about what [name_u]Sully[/name_u] actually means as a word

  • [name_m]Edison[/name_m] - we don’t want [name_m]Ed[/name_m] or [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] as a nickname (this is generally our problem with [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] as well)

  • [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] - love [name_u]Cam[/name_u] as a short form, but has [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] gone to the girls?

  • [name_m]Smith[/name_m] - is this too far out there for a first name/too plain? (I don’t think so)

Any suggestions for additional names and/or your thoughts on the issues identified above would be helpful.

Last names as first names are my favorite recently, so I’ll suggest some that I like.

[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]
[name_m]Cooper[/name_m]
[name_u]Carter[/name_u]
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]
[name_m]Sampson[/name_m]/[name_m]Samson[/name_m]
[name_m]Ford[/name_m]
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u]
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]

[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] is darling! I wouldn’t be worried about what “sully” means–I am not sure I’ve heard anyone else mention this, and [name_u]Sully[/name_u]'s adorable! I really doubt people would bring up “to sully” as an insult or to tease him, and [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] is gorgeous.

[name_m]Edison[/name_m] is gorgeous! [name_m]Edison[/name_m] is one of those names that doesn’t feel like it needs a nn, but I can see why you’d get rid of it if you dislike [name_m]Ed/name_m.

[name_u]Cameron[/name_u] - I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Cam[/name_u], as well, and [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] is very handsome! I have actually only ever known two Camerons (although they both spelled it differently), and they are both boys. I know in my head that it’s used for both genders, but it feels like a boys’ name to me.

[name_m]Smith[/name_m] - I actually know of two people who have used [name_m]Smith[/name_m] up front (one [name_m]Smith[/name_m] [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and one [name_m]Smith[/name_m] [name_u]Elisha[/name_u]), and I think it’s a fantastic name! I wish I could get into it, since it’s my grandpa’s last name (and he only had a set of initials, which is super hard to work with, and often he went by [name_m]Smitty[/name_m], which I think is so adorable!). If I could love [name_m]Smith[/name_m] any more, I would totally go for it. I don’t think it’s too boring–or crazy!

Lately I’ve really been liking [name_m]Stafford[/name_m]. I like that he could go by [name_m]Ford[/name_m] or even [name_u]Rory[/name_u] (which is my preference), and there’s just something about it! Other surnames I love:

other -sons ([name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], [name_u]Hudson[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u]–especially [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]!)
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilder[/name_m]
[name_u]Abbott[/name_u]
[name_u]Ashby[/name_u]
[name_u]Auden[/name_u]
[name_m]Barton[/name_m] (I grew up loving [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_m]Barton[/name_m]–and now love the Avengers–and think [name_m]Barton[/name_m] could be a cool tie to both [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and Hawkeye. :))

[name_m]Hale[/name_m]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
Kuiper (as in the Kuiper Belt in outer space. [name_m]Said[/name_m] like [name_u]KYE[/name_u]-per. I think it’s adorable!)
[name_u]Rhys[/name_u]/[name_u]Reese[/name_u]
[name_u]Schuyler[/name_u]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Wade[/name_u]

Good luck!

Most of my favorites are here already. My maiden was [name_m]Clark[/name_m], so I’m partial to that. On your names:
As a teacher, I see both male and female Camerons. I wouldn’t say it’s gone too female. In fact, most Cams I know are male.
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] is my favorite. I actually have a good friend from college nicknamed [name_u]Sully[/name_u]. Her last name was [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u], and the meaning of the word sully never even came into my mind. And we were English grad students working in name scholarship. I wouldn’t worry about that aspect.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Seems like my concern for “[name_u]Sully[/name_u]” may not be a big issue after-all.

One last thing on [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] - would it be an issue for people if the last name had “von or van” in it?

If you like [name_m]Smith[/name_m], perhaps you’d like Smithers, with nickname [name_m]Smith[/name_m]?

One of my son has a surname for a first name: [name_m]Truett[/name_m]. Of you list, I like [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] but now I’m unsure with your first name. I think [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] is still okay for a boy, too.

I like [name_m]Edison[/name_m] and [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]!

My fave last name as a first name is Kincaid. And I think [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] is great!

I love [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]. [name_m]Edison[/name_m] is cool. I like [name_u]Cam[/name_u] but am not a big fan of [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]–it feels dated to me. Maybe [name_u]Camden[/name_u]?

I like [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. I think it’s unique for a first without being out there. Reminds me of [name_m]Clark[/name_m] in a way.

ideas: (sorry for repeats, hopefully not all!)
[name_m]Donovan[/name_m]
[name_m]Anderson[/name_m]
[name_m]Jarvis[/name_m]
[name_m]Truman[/name_m]
[name_m]Wells[/name_m]
[name_m]Thayer[/name_m]
[name_u]Kiernan[/name_u]
[name_m]Callahan[/name_m]
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m]
[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]
[name_m]Hayes[/name_m]
[name_m]Macauley[/name_m]
[name_m]Nixon[/name_m]
[name_u]Wallace[/name_u]

Ohh, I actually like all the name you have listed, and I think any of them can be pulled off, even smith.
I know a couple of men named [name_m]Edison[/name_m], they all get called [name_m]Edison[/name_m] (at least at my office anyways), and I agree that [name_m]Edison[/name_m] is a handsom name, but [name_m]Ed[/name_m] and [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] and are not so much. [name_m]Edison[/name_m] to me belongs to a gentleman who is dedicated to learning.
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u], that’s a cool name, I like how it rolls off the tongue, [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] belongs to kind of a cool laid back guy, that everyone likes. He is a gentleman too.
[name_m]Smith[/name_m], to me, this guy is really cool, sets the trends, lots of people would admire him.
[name_u]Cameron[/name_u], I love this name, it makes me think of fall. This name goes on a guy that is also. Laid back but also athletic. I like this name on a girl as well, however I have mostly met men with this name, and the one little girl I know with this name spells it [name_u]Camryn[/name_u].
Over all I think you can’t go wrong with any of your choices.
