Latent worries about Evangeline...

le sigh

I don’t know why I do this. I have come to adore the name [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] “[name_f]Eva[/name_f]”–it’s wiggled my way into my top three. I love the lacy [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and the spunky [name_u]Dagny[/name_u]; I love that it reminds me of stained glass, which then reminds me of my mom, who has done stained glass projects for years, and my Scandinavian ancestry, and I love that [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] means “new day”, and I love my beloved nn [name_f]Eva[/name_f]. I love everything about her! But my mom and brother managed to see me commenting on her a few hours ago on Nameberry, and went on and on about how awful it is ([name_u]Dagny[/name_u] in particular!), all about daggers and singing these violent songs about death and killing that I’m trying not to remember (apparently some folk song I’ve never heard of; I’m trying not to recall the details lol). I’m not the sort of person who will take off a name from my list because a family member (not even my mom, who I’m incredibly close to) hates it, but is [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] really that bad?! I won’t let [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] go because of them, but if they brought up warranted concerns, I’d like to know, and I might let it go for that reason. Is [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] a categorically bad name, and/or is [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] terrifyingly awful?!

I feel like most Berries I’ve spoken with really love it, but in light of their reaction, I feel like I just need a bit of extra reassurance. (Although I’m trying to take their opinion with a grain of salt; these criticisms are coming from the same woman who found [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] to be an old hag name and [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] to be over-the-top…)

And, assuming [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] isn’t categorically ridiculous, which of these family names do you like best with it? I’d loved one middle for it for so long, but all my combos have one family name and [name_f]Eva[/name_f] doesn’t really have one yet, so this is what I’ve been toying with…

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] (is this too long? I love classic [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] at the end of [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u]!)
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] (I think [name_f]Eva[/name_f] Roo would be rather sweet?)
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_u]Wren[/name_u]

I’m also sort of considering [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], and [name_f]Natalia[/name_f], but I didn’t like them quite as much as the others…

Thanks, Berries!

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], I feel ya! I commented on a post on Nameberry’s page, and my father somehow came across it and that was a mess! Lol.

I don’t know a ton about [name_u]Dagny[/name_u]. I could look it up, but off the top of my head, I can’t tell you the origin, famous bearers, or negative connotations. All I know is it sounds beautiful and offbeat in a good way. I knew a [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] in college and she wore the name well without issue. She was the artsy, sweet but walked to be beat of her own drummer type. That’s what the name makes me think of  I’m sorry your family had that type of reaction to it!

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] is a gorgeous combo and, even without the second middle name, it is one of my favorites of the names you’ve considered  now, as far as your list goes, I really like [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] ([name_f]Eva[/name_f] Roo is way too adorable!), or [name_u]Wren[/name_u] in that second middle spot! [name_f]Kate[/name_f] I think adds class and flair to nearly any combo. [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is such an underrated, beautiful name with such a great Biblical association. [name_u]Wren[/name_u]…I think that will be my top favorite. There’s a Youtube family, ( [name_u]Nat[/name_u] and [name_m]Wes[/name_m] (and the Rest!) ), who are a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] family of vloggers, and their baby girl is named [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u]. In the name explanation video for her, the mom explained that they chose [name_u]Wren[/name_u] as the middle because she was a spring baby and they loved thinking of her as their “little spring bird” and just how springtime is a time of new birth/new life… see where I’m going with this? if [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] means “new day”, I think a springtime/new birth/new life name would really be a sweet addition to your combo!

Oh, please don’t let [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] go just because of some offhand comment! I know she’s been one of your favourites for some time.

[name_u]Truth[/name_u] be told, I’ve never heard of [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] before. She’s beautiful though, and adds a certain uniqueness and flair to [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]. Also, [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]? Swoon!!

There is absolutely nothing “terrifyingly awful” about [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u]! It is an elegant, beautiful choice for a baby girl. So don’t worry so much about what other people think, focus on yourself and your heart and what you love, because you have a beautiful combo.

Nope. [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] is a perfection. It’s probably my favourite [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] combo in this entire forum (after my own, of course). I still miss [name_f]Hope[/name_f], but from your current list I favour [name_f]Kate[/name_f] or [name_u]Wren[/name_u].

I think [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] is perfect for you - there is nothing wrong with [name_u]Dagny[/name_u]! It makes me think of an adorable Norwegian girl with freckles and her red hair in plaits - must be an [name_m]Edvard[/name_m] Grieg association.
I really like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f].

I’ve never come across the name [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] but I think that it’s rather sweet and spunky.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] (my neice is called [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f])

I like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] or [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f].

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] is beautiful! I love the juxtaposition of uber-girly, elaborate [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and spiky, funky [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] (and I agree - the meaning of [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] is just the best!)

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is utterly gorgeous.

Thanks, everyone!

My concerns have been sufficiently allayed. My mom has always made a big point of saying, “Look, I’m not always going to like the names you do, but I already had my shot, so use the names you love!” So I’m not concerned about not using it just because she doesn’t like it, but if her reasoning for not liking it was valid, I would be willing to consider rejecting it for a valid reason she might bring up! In the past, though, they mostly haven’t been valid (I’m still laughing at the [name_u]Ari[/name_u] the Airhead joke she had half a decade ago. Does she not realize how popular [name_u]Ari[/name_u] is as a nn?! Or the idea that [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] would be a wimp because of one she knew–ha!), but this one they went on and on about and I was just crushed. I needed some extra bolstering. :stuck_out_tongue: I really don’t even share names with my family anymore, unless my sisters ask, because their comments aren’t helpful and I like the idea of a name being a complete surprise when a baby does come along, but they went snooping. :frowning:

And thanks for all the input on combos, too! I think [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is out for good, and I am leaning toward [name_u]Wren[/name_u] as the first choice, with [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] as second, maybe. I do like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], but neither seems quite so special? I welcome more feedback on the middles because I’ve gone in circles trying to find the perfect family name to go with [name_f]Eva[/name_f].

Thanks for walking me off the ledge, Berries!

I love [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u].
