Hello! I haven’t posted in quite a while but I had just a small idea for a new one about pirates. We need a full enough crew, and I already have the name for the captain of The Cormorant’s Pride, the name of the ship. He’s called [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m] [name_f]Brittany[/name_f], after the sea of the same name in the Middle [name_f]East[/name_f]. We’ve got the first mate, Sir [name_m]Raymond[/name_m] [name_m]Teague[/name_m], and a few crew members who only deserve first names because they are generally unimportant to the plot, being [name_m]Keefe[/name_m], [name_m]Crosby[/name_m] and [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]. Then the youngest member of the crew, maybe fifteen or so, possibly sixteen, is our young sentinel who usually stands at the crow’s nest. He has chestnut brown hair, watery blue eyes and is the tallest member.
I was thinking:
Calsipher (pronounced like the name Calcifer, but spelled differently)
[name_m]Seamus[/name_m] or [name_u]Kieran[/name_u] (both very Irish)
[name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_u]Cal[/name_u] for short
I wasn’t planning on giving the lookout a surname because he’s a pirate, but if need apply, I was just thinking Wilde as a last name for [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] or [name_u]Kieran[/name_u].
Hey - As a writer myself, I recognise this dilemma! Picking names for characters is so hard! It’s a bit difficult for me to suggest a name, without knowing anything about his personality (if he’s a minor character, that’s probably not as important though), but I think all of your names would work with Wilde as a surname really well. I think any of them would probably suit the character but I love Calsipher - it’s a great name for a slightly shady/less normalistic character (which pirates generally are!) and shortening it to [name_u]Cal[/name_u], when needed, makes it fit in well with [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] and [name_m]Raymond[/name_m], which are more traditional names. My second choice would be [name_u]Kieran[/name_u] (as much as I love [name_m]Callum[/name_m] and [name_m]Seamus[/name_m], they feel like ‘soft’ names to me, which don’t fit in with ‘pirate’ - again though, as the lookout, it’s probably less important)
I think [name_m]Callum[/name_m] or Calsipher, since either can be shortened to the nickname [name_u]Cal[/name_u]. I think a character named Calsipher will stand out more than a [name_m]Callum[/name_m], so if he’s a very minor character it may be distracting. I love the names you’ve already come up with, they’re great pirate names!
Also, if you check out the writer’s forum instead of the boy’s name forum, you might get more people who love to help with this stuff. I know I do!
I am sure that whatever name you choose the reader will come to associate people of that name as being similar to the character but, as have not yet read your unwritten book, I wonder if Calsipher possibly has nut brown eyes, rather than watery blue? Or maybe there is a back story there (his mother had her eye on a shipwrecked Spaniard who was repatriated and thus suffered unrequited love, even though she did marry [name_u]Cal[/name_u]'s father?)
I like [name_u]Cal[/name_u]. Whether it be short for [name_m]Calum[/name_m] or Calsipher or [name_m]Caleb[/name_m].
Not keen on [name_u]Kieran[/name_u] at all. Does not strike me as a pirate name… but then again, maybe he was never planning to be, a pirate I mean
