Latin/Greek Names

If I name my first daughter [name_f]Meliora[/name_f], I’ll be in a world of hurt, because I have absolutely no ideas on what to name her brothers or sisters.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Meliora[/name_f] is a Latin name, stemming from the Latin word melior, meaning ‘ever better’. It’s also the motto of the University of [name_m]Rochester[/name_m], and the name of an album by the band [name_f]Ghost[/name_f]. I love it.

[name_f][/name_f]

I get a lot of good responses to this name, people generally think it’s beautiful, and love it’s meaning. I’m looking for uncommon Latin or Greek rooted names to match. A good meaning is preferable, but not necessary.

[name_f][/name_f]

Names I [name_m]Like[/name_m] But Can’t Use (I can’t use these due to most people feeling like they’re not suitable for real people.)

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_m]Invictus[/name_m] (Latin, means unconquerable)
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_m]Victarion[/name_m] (Latin, means conquerer)
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • Kaisarion (Greek, means little Caesar)
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • [name_m]Hyperion[/name_m] (Greek, means the high one)
  • [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

I don’t want any super common ones like [name_m]Julius[/name_m], [name_m]Titus[/name_m], Leo/Leon, Octavian/Octavia, Augustine/Augusta/Augustus.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]The[/name_m] only name I’m considering, is [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], but I’m still not so sure about it.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m also open to thoughts/concerns about [name_f]Meliora[/name_f], [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], or any of the names I like, but feel I can’t use.

[name_f][/name_f]

Please answer kindly. Thanks in advance.

I LOVE [name_f]Meliora[/name_f]! I’m also applying to [name_m]Rochester[/name_m] so I’m a little biased, but the meaning is so very lovely. For the supplemental essay I thought about writing something related to the meaning of [name_f]Meliora[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Zephan[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Zephyr[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

really liking [name_f]Meliora[/name_f] & [name_m]Zephan[/name_m], [name_f]Meliora[/name_f] & [name_m]Olivian[/name_m], [name_f]Meliora[/name_f] & [name_m]Caledon[/name_m], and [name_f]Meliora[/name_f] & [name_m]Ilias[/name_m]

For a lot of these, especially [name_m]Castor[/name_m], I like, but I feel like they don’t have the same brilliance as I get from [name_f]Meliora[/name_f].

Okay Meliora and Leonidas would be a great set!

Other ideas…

Adelpha (“beloved sister”)
Alethea (“truth”)
Amarantha (“unfading”)
Calantha (“lovely flower”)
Eirini (“peace”)
Iolanthe (“violet flower”)
Ismene (“knowledgeable”)
Nerida (“sea nymph”)
Phaedra (“bright”)
Phyllida (“green bough”)
Sirilla (“lordly”)
Thalassa (“the sea”)
Zelenia (“moon”)

Aloysius (“famous warrior”)
Augustin (“great, magnificent”)
Cymbeline (“sun lord or sun hound”)
Halcyon (“kingfisher”)
Lysander (“liberator”)
Morpheus (“dream”)
Ophelion (“help, aid; profit, benefit”)
Phoebus (“sun”)
Porfirio (“purple”)
Venedict (“blessed”)

I actually thought about [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m], but I was scared it would be too difficult for most to pronounce.

It’s definitely a challenge the first time you see it, but I don’t think that makes it unusable. I overheard it on a kid in a supermarket this summer!

[name_f]Fair[/name_f], do you have any nickname suggestions for [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m]? [name_f]Meliora[/name_f] is overflowing with endless nickname possibilities, but I can’t really think of any for [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m].

[name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] for a sister perhaps?

[name_m]Aloysius[/name_m] ‘Wish’ is a personal favourite!!

One question about another name, I have [name_m]Hyperion[/name_m] listed with the other names that I can’t use, but I actually don’t know why. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that would work well with [name_f]Meliora[/name_f]?

I do think they work together stylistically yes! [name_m]Hyperion[/name_m] is perhaps a tad less wearable though, with the word ‘hyper’ in there and its very imperious sound.

[name_f][/name_f]

I think my favourite of the ones I suggested would be [name_m]Ophelion[/name_m] as it has a meaning that really complements Meliora’s [name_f][/name_f]- could nickname him [name_m]Olly[/name_m] perhaps, or [name_m]Lio[/name_m].

[name_m]Ophelion[/name_m] is beautiful, and you’re right, it does work well with [name_f]Meliora[/name_f], but I was never a huge fan of [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], and I suppose that translates to [name_m]Ophelion[/name_m] too, unfortunate.

[name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Astrophel[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Sabina[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Hortensia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]Eumelia
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Gaia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Iphigeneia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Ambrosia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Euphemia[/name_f]

[name_m]Astrophel[/name_m] is a long time favourite, but the pronunciation at the beginning worries me.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Scipio[/name_m] is one of my favourites spelling wise, but I really don’t like it’s pronunciation.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f], I love the connection to the scholar, but the pronunciation is potentially an issue, because most people tend to pronounce it Hy-pay-shuh, and I’m pretty sure the Greek pronunciation is Hy-pa-tee-uh, or something similar, and I much prefer the Greek pronunciation.
