Laura and Mathilda, nn Tilly

Ok, first of all, is [name]Mathilda[/name] one of those sleeper names that has become popular, or is on the verge of becoming popular, like [name]Grace[/name] or [name]Charlotte[/name]?

And, if not, what about [name]Mathilda[/name], using the nickname [name]Tilly[/name]?

I hope my husband doesn’t hate it. I’m pretty sure he will hate [name]Mathilda[/name] but he might like [name]Tilly[/name].

Well, my name is [name]Lauren[/name] and my new baby is [name]Matilda[/name]!

I don’t think [name]Matilda[/name] will ever be a hit, top 100, major name. It doesn’t sound cute and light enough. Could [name]Tilly[/name] be, one day? Maybe, if the US has a UK-style love affair with nickname names. But I don’t believe it will happen to [name]Matilda[/name] with any spelling within the foreseeable future.

Is it trendy within a population subset? You betcha. Doesn’t matter to me because we’re in the rural south, far removed from big cities and hipsters. It might matter to you.

About the set specifically though, [name]Laura[/name] strikes me as timeless (how I wish my name was [name]Laura[/name] instead of [name]Lauren[/name]!). [name]Matilda[/name] doesn’t. It will have a date stamp. Also, [name]Laura[/name] is pretty feminine, but still womanly, and works well at any age. [name]Matilda[/name] not so much to me … the T and D sounds make it very strong, even with the -a ending, and even though I used it myself I’m not sure it will work well for a teenager. So I wouldn’t put them together personally.

I don’t think there’s anything specifically wrong with the set though, that would jump out at people you meet on the street. That’s just a name-nerd perspective!

My husband wasn’t really open to it, as I suspected.

I just can’t think of a good name that will work with [name]Laura[/name] and not get vetoed by some other family complication.

Like, [name]Charlotte[/name] would be good but I’m hoping to name a future boy child [name]Charles[/name], so that nixes [name]Charolotte[/name].

And [name]Lucy[/name] would be good, but my parent’s names are [name]Charles[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] so, going on the hope of a future baby named [name]Charles[/name], I don’t want my children to have the same exact names as my parents- that’s creepy.

I also want each to have their own initial, ideally but I could be flexible on that. So, no C names and no L names. And I don’t like anything with too much alliteration, so no F names because our last name starts with F.

And our last name is a noun- [name]Fisher[/name]- so, nothing like [name]Pearl[/name] or [name]Ruby[/name].
[name]Pearl[/name] [name]Fisher[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Fisher[/name], sounds like they are hunting for those gems.

at the top of my joke name list is [name]Star[/name] [name]Fisher[/name], haha.

So, you are right [name]Mathilda[/name] probably isn’t going to be THE name.

Oh, other good choices that have to be ruled out b/c of family reasons- [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Claire[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Jean[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Rebecca[/name].

I’m just a mess.

This baby better be a boy!
