I’ve had this named picked out for my [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Girl due in [name_f]September[/name_f] before I even knew I was pregnant. Then came the whole [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]/Yanny deal a few weeks ago.
I’m worried that: A) The name might become popular now that there is a pop culture reference, and I don’t like names that are too popular. or B) People will call her Yanny and think they’re hilarious.
I thought about changing the name, but it’s the only one I love, and it just feels right. Would you be worried? It was up 481% on Nameberry a few days ago, but now is trending back down. Thoughts???
considering [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] was outside of the top 100 on last year’s most popular names in the US, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. And yeah, people will probably make the whole [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]/Yanney joke, but that’s a pretty timely joke, and it will most likely fade into obscurity. Bottom line, if it’s sending you love and can’t stop thinking about, then that’s what you should use.
Thanks! That’s what I’m thinking. If there were another name I was considering it would be one thing. But there is nothing else I like nearly as much. I just hate that this had to happen riiiight before I’m about to have my baby. What are the odds?!?
I love [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]!!! And I already forgot about the [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]/ yanny thing. I don’t think anyone will make that joke come [name_f]September[/name_f]. Definitely not something you’d hear her whole life.
People will forget about the [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]/Yanny thing in a few weeks or months, so don’t worry yourself about it. I can guarantee that your child will not have to worry about it as she grows up. She’d more likely have to deal with people confusing her name for [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], but that’s very minor. I knew a [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] in high school and she got on just fine. I say go for it!
It’s my middle name and I wish I had changed it to my first or went by my middle in college or something. I have always loved it and I think its a great name. That weird trend with yannis thing will be gone before shes a year old i’m sure.
I don’t think the whole [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]/Yanny thing will be around for much longer. I think [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] is a gorgeous name and I think if you love it then go for it and to hell with what other people may think.
I think if you wanted to name your baby Yanney you’d totally have people making that reference, but not [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]. It’s a beautiful, classic, feminine name.
Honestly I’m 20 and I think this [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]/Yanny joke will die down very soon, it’s alreay peaked. I also love the name [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] and I think by the time the child is old enough to talk it will be old news
Thanks to all for your feedback. You have helped to ease my mind a great deal. Almost certain this little girl will be [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] ”
She is our first girl, our rainbow and also our caboose. So excited for her to be here soon!
I agree with pps that [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] is a great name and that the Yanny thing will be very fleeting and not something your daughter will be constantly dealing with as she grows up. I think you should stick with what you love.
I think the [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]/Yanny thing honestly lasted for less than a week. It may be mentioned once or twice, but it won’t be something that will leave a mark on pop culture.
I wouldn’t worry about it becoming overly popular. I do think you’ll get [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]/Yanney jokes for about a year (maybe even less, the internet has a short attention span), which might be short-term annoying, but I really can’t see it having a negative affect on your daughter.
If I were you I’d stick with [name_f]Laurel[/name_f].
