Lawrence?

So I have been looking through my family tree, which I do more often than I care to admit! I discovered the name [name]Lawrence[/name] and loved it instantly! My husband even likes it (I’m shocked at that!)

So what to you think of [name]Lawrence[/name]? [name]Do[/name] you think it’s a big name for a tiny baby?

I like [name]Lawrence[/name] too but I can’t decide between it and the alternate spelling, [name]Laurence[/name]. Either way, I love the nn [name]Laurie[/name] I don’t think it’s too big for a baby and I can definitely see it on a little boy!

Also I think it works really well with your two little girls’ names in your signature!

I think it’s a very good name. I know a few people with that name (early twenties), but I have yet to encounter a baby [name]Lawrence[/name].

I like [name]Lawrence[/name]. It is a good name. I do prefer the [name]Lawrence[/name] spelling because it seems more masculine and almost cowboyish. I wouldn’t worry about it being a big name for a tiny baby, because that tiny baby won’t stay tiny long.

[name]Lawrence[/name] is a great manly classic. It’s my dad’s name and dh’s middle. The lack of a good nickname (no way I could do [name]Larry[/name]) has kept it out of the first name spot for us but I can see it’s appeal.

I proposed [name]Laurence[/name] to DH nn [name]Laurie[/name] and he hated it, but I still like it. [name]Lawrence[/name] seems like a lawyer to me, maybe it’s just the spelling association in my head, but it seems more buttoned up and proper while [name]Laurence[/name] seems a little more fun and spontaneous.

I’ve met a [name]Lawrence[/name] with the nn Renzie/[name]Renzy[/name], just throwing that idea out there, I think it’s kind of cool :).

The name is handsome and distinguished with great depth and history. I do prefer the original spelling [name]Laurence[/name] (after all, the name comes from the Latin [name]Laurentius[/name] which meant “from Laurentum”. Laurentum was a ancient city in [name]Italy[/name]). However, since the 19th century, the spelling [name]Lawrence[/name] has been more common, mostly in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name]. Personally, I find [name]Lawrence[/name] with the word “law” in front quite unattractive. It has literary and cultural signifance. [name]Saint[/name] [name]Laurence[/name] was a 3rd-century deacon and martyr from [name]Rome[/name] and one of my favourite actors was Sir [name]Laurence[/name] [name]Olivier[/name]. The novel “[name]Little[/name] Women” had a fun character with the name. You have to remember that children grow up and spend most of the lives as adults so I don’t share your concern that “it’s a big name for a tiny baby”. You have many nn options: [name]Larry[/name], [name]Laurie[/name], [name]Lorin[/name], [name]Lorne[/name] or [name]Lowry[/name]. It’s one of my favourite boys names - traditional but not too common.

I think [name]Laurence[/name]/[name]Lawrence[/name] is a fantastic name, and fits very well with [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Annabelle[/name]. Handsome and an under-used classic!

I love [name]Lawrence[/name]! Some great namesakes; D.H. [name]Lawrence[/name], [name]Lawrence[/name] of [name]Arabia[/name], [name]Laurence[/name] [name]Olivier[/name], [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Lawrence[/name]… [name]Jennifer[/name] [name]Lawrence[/name]'s a girl, but a positive association I think!

I adore this name and it is certainly in our top three should we have another son, though we would use [name]Laurence[/name]-with-a-U. For many of the reasons mischa mentioned, I find it handsome, distinguished, deeply rooted but still familiar and approachable.

I actually know a boy named [name]Lawson[/name] who goes by [name]Law[/name] quite a bit–so that might be a nn option if the name feels too big. have to say that I think Larry is pretty vile.

A wonderful name and one I’ve not heard given to a baby in decades, classic with such a rich history. I am very jealous and it was on my list (nn [name]Larry[/name]) but DH vetoed it.

Thanks for your feedback! I actually prefer the spelling [name]Laurence[/name] to [name]Lawrence[/name] to however in my family tree it was spelt [name]Lawrence[/name] and I also have a cousin name [name]Lauren[/name]. [name]Even[/name] thought we don’t see her more than once every few years, [name]Laurence[/name] and [name]Lauren[/name] is a little too close for my liking.
[name]Lawrence[/name] is definitely going on my top names list!
