Leah and Amelia too close?

We are thinking about using [name]Amelia[/name] for a little girl. My only hesitation is that my name is [name]Leah[/name].

While I like honoring family with baby names (and [name]Amelia[/name] was my great grandmother’s middle name), I don’t really feel comfortable naming my child after myself or my husband- and he agrees, but doesn’t think that [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Leah[/name] are similar at all because we would pronounce them differently. We would pronounce it [name]Ah[/name]-meal-ya (with the nicknames [name]Amy[/name] and [name]Millie[/name]) but I think that it may be too close.

I’ve always kind of felt that his name and our daughter’s name sounds kind of similar ([name]Chris[/name] and [name]Grace[/name]) but they are so different in spelling, that people don’t really notice (I only really notice because when I call for one, they both answer!).

So, what do you think? Mom [name]Leah[/name] with baby [name]Amelia[/name]?

I would honestly not even make a connection with these two names, and I’m a word nerd! [name]Amelia[/name] is beautiful, and I think it’s lovely with [name]Grace[/name]. I wouldn’t let the ending sound throw you off, they’re not spelled or pronounced similarly.

I agree with the PP, I don’t hear a strong connection between the names. I’m assuming you pronounce your name [name]LEE[/name]-uh (vs. [name]LAY[/name]-uh). I pronounce [name]Amelia[/name], uh-MEAL-ya. Nothing like [name]LEE[/name]-uh. [name]Even[/name] if I were to pronounce it the four syllable way, the emphasis wouldn’t fall on the [name]LEE[/name], but rather uh-MEAL-ee-UH, so it still sounds pretty different from [name]Leah[/name].

Anyway, I think [name]Amelia[/name] is lovely, and especially if you’re going with [name]Amy[/name] or [name]Millie[/name] as a nickname, it isn’t too close. It’s great with [name]Grace[/name] as well!

Good luck, hope that helps!

I think it’s fine. I know siblings named [name]Julia[/name] and [name]Leah[/name] and it seems to be fine, and it’s even less of an issue with a parent/child. And [name]Amelia[/name] is even more distinct in sound to [name]Leah[/name] than [name]Julia[/name].

[name]Grace[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] are really nice together!

I don’t think they’re too close at all, especially with [name]Amy[/name] or [name]Millie[/name] as a nn. If you had your heart set on [name]Mia[/name] (mee-ah) as a nn, then it might be too similar to [name]Leah[/name]. [name]Love[/name] [name]Amelia[/name]! Beautiful name!
