Leland vs Emmett - A Naming Dilemma

Hello all,

First of all I should mention my husband and I are not expecting and are not even “technically” TTC just yet, but we do love a good discussion about names and what our future family may look like. Due to our last name, we have deemed it unfit to bestow a name beginning with the letter “J” upon our children, which takes my long time loves, [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u], off of the table.

After much discussion, it is quite obvious that the names [name_u]Leland[/name_u] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] keep finding their way to the top of our rather short list.

My husband loves the name [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], and well, I am finding the name to be sort of lackluster. Also, I find it important to note that his youngest sister, she is 3, is named [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. The names are very similar in sound. My husband disagrees, but I can’t get over how similar they sound. I don’t completely dislike [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], I just feel like there is better out there.

Which brings me to the name [name_u]Leland[/name_u]. To be honest, [name_u]Leland[/name_u] has only been on our radar for maybe a month. My husband and I both actually work in the same healthcare setting and each on different occasions encountered a patient named [name_u]Leland[/name_u]. I had the first encounter and made a mental note of the name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] days later my husband encountered the same patient and came home talking about the name and how much he liked it. I thought we were set, but my husband now keeps mentioning that while he likes [name_u]Leland[/name_u], he still prefers [name_u]Emmett[/name_u].

Fair enough. So now I am asking you to weigh in on the [name_u]Leland[/name_u] vs [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] debate. Is the name [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] too close to the name [name_f]Emma[/name_f]?

It would also be super stellar if you were to maybe suggest some alternative names. Maybe names that give the same vibe as [name_u]Leland[/name_u] or [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]. I’m always open to compromise. [name_m]Just[/name_m] remember, no “J” names and please no names ending in an en/in/on sound.

Much appreciation.

I think [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] are too close for siblings but I don’t think it is too close for aunt and nephew.

My first thought as an alternative was [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], which unfortunately might have been ruined for some by Weinstein and the deadly hurricane…

Alternative names:

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u], [name_m]Leon[/name_m], [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_u]Vernon[/name_u]

I agree that [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] are pretty close, although it may be okay for an aunt and nephew.

Other ideas:

[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_u]Barrett[/name_u]
[name_u]Bryce[/name_u]
[name_u]Rhys[/name_u]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]/[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Ansel[/name_m]
[name_u]Noel[/name_u]
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_m]Truett[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
[name_u]Lennox[/name_u]
[name_m]Julius[/name_m]
[name_m]Raymond[/name_m]
[name_u]Remy[/name_u]
[name_m]Dominic[/name_m]
[name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_u]Asa[/name_u]
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
[name_m]Gareth[/name_m]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]
[name_m]Lowell[/name_m]

[name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] are close, but I think it’s OK in this instance.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Elwood[/name_m] or [name_m]Alaric[/name_m]?
