My great Grandmother’s name was Lena (pronounced “Lee-nuh”)
I would love to use this as a first name, anyone have experience with mispronunciation, regrets of spelling, etc.
Thanks

I think most people know how to pronounce it because of [name_f]Lena[/name_f] [name_m]Dunham[/name_m].
I think Lena pronounced Lee-Nah is common enough that you shouldn’t have many pronunciation issues! I think I’ve actually only met Lenas who pronounced their name that way. It also reminds me of actress Lena Headey!
I would pronounce in [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-nah, but I’ve heard it pronounced [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nah a few times so it wouldn’t surprise me to hear it said that way.
I’ve always pronounced it Leh-nah and if I think of the [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nah sound I’d probably consider [name_f]Lina[/name_f] instead. This was actually a nickname my boss gave me ages ago which I absolutely hated haha so my vote would go for [name_f]Lena[/name_f]
I’ve heard it pronounced [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nuh enough that i don’t think it would be too confusing
I read it as [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-nuh due to the same appearance in [name_f]Elena[/name_f] (pr. Eh-lay-nuh). But since [name_f]Elena[/name_f] can be pronounced differently, I don’t see why [name_f]Lena[/name_f] couldn’t be pronounced [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nuh if that’s what you prefer
I’d pronounce it like [name_f]Lena[/name_f]. I prefer this spelling!
I pronounce it lay-nuh, but I’ve never met anyone with the name so I can see how it’d be lee-nah as well.
I also go between leh-na and lay-na, but wouldn’t be surprised to come across one who pronounces it lee-na.
Lee-nuh would be my instinct! I’m guessing you would get some varied pronunciations with this name ([name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nuh, [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-nuh, Leh-nuh), but I think it would be easy to correct people. And I love [name_f]Lena[/name_f]–simple but unexpected, sweet, strong, and I can picture it on any girl at any age. Plus the connection to your great grandmother makes it extra special! I would totally use it.
At first, I though it was ley-na. Then I was like, ‘no, it must be len-ah’. I did not know it was pronounced lee-nuh until you said, but maybe that’s just me. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name, btw.
one of my favorite names. I’ve met people who pronounce [name_f]Lena[/name_f] both as [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-na and as [name_m]Len[/name_m]-uh. I think both pronunciations are lovely
For me: [name_f]Lena[/name_f] = “lay-nah” and [name_f]Lina[/name_f] = “lee-nah”
I would say [name_f]Lena[/name_f] as [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nuh, and I like this spelling a lot more than “[name_f]Lina[/name_f].” I think [name_f]Lena[/name_f] is gorgeous!
I wouldn’t be surprised to hear [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-na, [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-na, or [name_m]Len[/name_m]-na with the [name_f]Lena[/name_f] spelling. I say go for it. People may say it wrong when they see it, but that is easily corrected, and I am pretty sure most people would write down [name_f]Lena[/name_f] when you say [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-na.
[name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nah is exactly how I would pronounce it!
I’ve only ever heard this pronounced “[name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nah” I honestly couldn’t even think of another option for a different pronunciation until I read through the comments!
I never did understand how people pronounced [name_f]Elena[/name_f] like “[name_f]El[/name_f]-lay-na” I always say it like “[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]-ah” in my head. “[name_m]Len[/name_m]-na” might happen occasionally but I think it would be few and far between.
I would say people would get it right 90% of the time
I had some Greek relatives named [name_f]Lena[/name_f] pronounce it as [name_m]Len[/name_m]-na. But I would say [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-na. To me, [name_f]Lena[/name_f]/Lina are the same and the other should be [name_f]Lenna[/name_f].
I had a childhood friend with this name, and she also pronounced it [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-nuh, so that’s how I’d instinctively pronounce it. I think it’s beautiful!
