Lengthy Nicknames?

I love full names and I love to nickname people, not permanently, just lightly.

(Only if they are willing)

So while I might occasionally call a [name_m]Thompson[/name_m] [name_m]Tom[/name_m] or a [name_m]Reginald[/name_m] [name_m]Reg[/name_m], I might also call a [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_m]Thompson[/name_m] and a [name_m]Reg[/name_m] [name_m]Reginald[/name_m].

I’m wondering if any others might, say, name their daughter [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and then nn her [name_f]Adamaris[/name_f]. Or name their son [name_m]Joe[/name_m] and nn him [name_m]Josiah[/name_m]?

Just curious.

I’ve never heard of this happening “officially”, meaning I’ve never heard of somebody planning to use a longer name as the nickname for their baby. But, I’ve definitely seen it evolve naturally, and I certainly do it sometimes!

For example I babysit a little girl called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (that’s her full name, it’s not short for anything) but I find myself calling her [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] sometimes as a lighthearted nickname. I also have a friend [name_u]Billy[/name_u] (not short for [name_m]William[/name_m]) and people jokingly call him [name_m]William[/name_m] or occasionally “Billiam” as a nickname.

I think it’s a fun thing to do but I don’t see people using longer nicknames in more formal situations. Like, [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] can be [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] in class, but [name_m]Tom[/name_m] probably won’t be called [name_m]Thompson[/name_m] by his teachers if that’s not his formal name.

No, not his teachers, but among peers, spouses or partners, etc.

Your term of lighthearted nickname describes it well. Being playful with names.

I do this all the time
I’ll call someone who is “just [name_f]Lily[/name_f]” [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] or [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], an [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is [name_f]Aveline[/name_f].

Not so jokingly, when I worked with a lot of kids I would always slip up and “[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]” would get called “[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]” while “[name_u]Oliver[/name_u]” would get called “[name_u]Ollie[/name_u].”

I do this all the time. I even call my friend whose nickname is [name_f]Luci[/name_f], Lucita even though that is not at all what her actual first name is.
